Coilover installation question (1 Viewer)

I have noticed that the racers mount the coilover so the mounting eyes are vertical so that the bolt is parallel to the axle (for perspective) for both top and bottom mounts, rock guys are the opposite they install the CO so the bolt is passing through perpendicular to the axle. I have also see it where one of the mounts is vertical and the other is horizontal. Is there any significance to the mounting style? obviously for articulation purposes having them so the bolts are perp to the axles both top and bottom makes sense, but does it really matter?

What do you use? recommend for a street driven rig?

My 2 cents... it doesn't matter which direction you mount the top or bottum of the coilover as long as throughout the range of motion (articulation/compression) you do not exceed the amount of misalignment allowed by the spherical ends of the coilover. That being said I also believe that the spherical/rod ends of a coilover will last longer (and therefore create less noise) mounted perpendicular to the axle. This is assuming that you're using missalignment spacers and the coilover is free to rotate about its mounting point/bolt. I think, and could be wrong, that this way of mounting will require less movement of the ball and therefore also mean less wear on the joint.

x2 - and depending on your links and how the axle moves around during travel, the mount may be somewhere between perp. and parallel.

"easy way" would be to wait until you have the links attached, and axle bolted under the rig- stuff one side, droop the other, and that'll tell ya which way the bracket needs to be pointed.

Sam, keep us posted and psot pics of what you came up with. A coilover conversion could be my next mod since I need to go to 2.5" shocks anyway.
