the clam shell one looks a little less cumbersome

I've only used these types of spring compressors
COIL SPRING COMPRESSOR 4 CLAW P/N FS1554 | eBay

they can be a bit fiddly getting to the bolt to wind them up though.

You don't really need spring compressors for a solid axle landcruiser. I've only used them when putting spacers in as it makes it easier. Worst thing is trying to get the compressor off the spring out of the vehicle and finding you run out of travel in the spring compressor and have to rig it up in a press.

you dont need a coil spring compressor for your LC
Just undo the lower shock mount and raise the truck and pull the spring
As far compressors I do not know, all I do know is that they can be dangerous

Yeah, I have a similar set. They work, but I have had some close calls with them. The other styles seem safer.

What about installing new lift springs? I needed to slightly compress the lift springs on my 4Runner.

IMO swapping coils on a Land Cruiser WITHOUT a coil compressor is far easier than trying to do it WITH one, and far safer too.

x2. You'll need to unbolt the swaybar too if you're still running one. I don't like using compressors 'cuz they end up scratching the powdercoat off the new springs.

I had no problems installing lift springs
I just dont like compressors
I would rather put a bottle jack between the frame and axle and push them apart that way if need be, which I have done
If you undo the shocks a sways it is easily doable
A hilift also comes in handy as well
The process might take longer than compressors but I think it is safer
And always have the vehicle supported with sometype of backup support jack stands, hilift etc.

If you aren't going to do this very often get a strut compressor from Autozone through their loaner tool program. While you are in their get the head gasket leak detector for your 80. All free of charge.
