681(JD green) IS OEM and would be correct for 81-83(US and others), if thats what it is now, I would leave it, I think its a great color.....as it happens to be what my 82 is(and its original inside and out) South America got lots of bright colors.

I do get asked if its a repaint as almost no one has seen the 681 color, there were not many of them in the states.

crappy pic

I really like that color!!

full US spec, buckets, roll bar, short seats, 2 heaters, full smog......bought it from the widow of the original owner 10+ years ago, right in my home town, was sold new in Florida, spent most its life in western WA and owned by an aircraft engineer, so no puck crap ever done to it. I paid so little everyone would cry ;) it was not for sale when I found it. The color has me stumped for a little bit....but its the real deal.

never been painted, no rust, original survivor, which for a late model is pretty uncommon, added a few things but not a single non stock hole drilled in the body(cept that damn antenna)

where are the pics?

landpimp yours must have been a 'versiona americana'. did it come with split seats and rear roll bar? this one here has the bench and the long rear seats. no bar no dash pads.

this 1983 is rare though bec it has the japanese/toyota original metal top.

They are coming. I am in Colombia now where I have a an airport car/taxi business. I am a gringo but come here often. I want to ship them to the USA and resell them but I am getting through the redtape and cultural hoops for now. I posted a yellow softop (code name Marisol) that I was going to buy but had some issues with the seller. Shame bec original condition.

This has been a frustrating run so far. We will see. I will take pics tommorrow. I have decided to buy this one and contract here a full body off frame restoration. I want to see if I can overcome some of the 'south american' 'restoration' prejudices (it's really the same in the USA too).

Your comments about no changes to car are so true. they are so fun I to modify that each owner does it over 35 years and you end up with a mess (whether in USA or Colombia).

I found a few original original ones but i think restoring it to original will be best route.

My biggest problem now is that I want to buy and own them all!

FYI please. Are those 15 inch steelies that are original? I thought they came with the white wagon wheels or was that an upgrade? I like the grey steelies. are they 15 or 16? here they have the 16 split grey rims which are cool but there is the highway use issue not sure.

it came with white wagon wheels, I took them off, had OEm chrome on(from a fj60) then back to the hub cap style(15").......they really do look the best regardless of being incorrect for the year. Even without the caps on I think they look the best.

Went from white bezel to chome, back to white ;) I have the complete OEM chrome package(bezel, bumper, bumperettes) in boxes.

Here's your visual...

Please, take it down... My eyes, MY EYES!!!

Chas, it would be cool if you began importing fj43s. Perfect cruiser in my opinion.

This is a tough one. I dont like the John Deere green, but if Im restoring an 83 40, I would have a hard time painting it anything other than the original color. However, I think it also depends on if you are doing it to resell or to keep for yourself. If you plan on keeping it, I would definitely paint it a color you like. If you plan to resell when you are done, it makes it a harder decision. It would then depend on how popular the color is, which may be why you started the thread. There are some who love the John Deere green, and would love a fully restored one. But if someone is about to drop a bunch of money on a restored 40, I have to think that most peoples' first choice would be something other than that, and if its a quality resto, they probably arent going to care too much if its a color change. After all, the most expensive road car ever sold at auction, just recently a red Ferrari for $27.5 million, was originally blue. But to answer your question, I am not a fan of John Deere green.

(Also not a fan of any metallic colors on a 40.)

I didn't know that car was blue. WOW! I love old Ferrari's that aren't red. Do you know what blue it was?

Not sure, just heard it was a metallic blue.

Thanks much. I finally bought it and put it in my garage at my apartment. soon it goes to my body shop guy for a full body off restoration. thus we CAN change the color but it is all numbers matching.

I want to do FJ43s I can find them but I think I will do that as my next one. Despite 4 years experience here in Colombia and a local business, local bank and perfect Spanish this has been a LOT harder learning curve that I thought.

However, there are indeed plenty of cruisers here to choose from. In the end I guess I am a perfectionist but I can not see sending them unless I can first restore them properly. I have met plenty of people here who are enthusiasts and know alot about these vehicles. Most I see that they are sending are $10k to $15k medium quality ones that just don't interest me.

I 'think' I can take advantage of some good mechanics, upholstery specialists and some body shops to restore them to a high quality and ship them. Time will tell. I still have to get through the mechanics of shipping them etc.

Without this site I would be lost. I have learned alot about these models.

FYI best thing is being 1983 is that I FIT in it at 6 foot 3 inchs!

1983 FJ40. has japanese factory top which is rare in colombia. this one has an interesting history was used by the local government utility. it is not pretty pretty but they have a reputation of proper maintenance and using all Toyota parts.

FYI I start a new thread. Special thanks again to Land Pimp I think I am staying with the original color.

Search "esmeralda" in the search function I am restoring this green one. Once again thanks to Landpimp and others for guiding me to keep the original paint code green!

Dear John, with your subscription software and priority parts only available and installed by you, I now consider there is too much commie yellow in your green.
