• (NEW) Working CB Radio Not new and doesn't transmit, but I can hear s*** real good
• Working Headlights one works most of the time
• Working Brake Lights nope
• Service Brakes – Must be able to stall
engine when idling in 2nd gear (1st if 3-

Gotta love those good ol' TLCA lists. :rolleyes:

I suppose there are some people who just can't function with out rules, or maybe TLCA can't function unless it invents a role for itself in todays wheeling world....no matter how useless and self justifying.

I find it funny that in most groups my truck is safest (especially for its level of modification), but I can't pass that list.
 
There are certain realities in life with which we all must abide by once in a while. The TLCA guidelines and safety checklist help provide us with insurance for the event. If you choose not to come because of this then it's your loss.

I run the safety inspections for our events. I'm looking for a well stocked first aid kit, a charged fire extinguisher, a working CB radio, proper battery hold down, and no fuel pouring out the bottom.

If you can't pass my inspection then you shouldn't be on the trail.
 
Common sense should dictate that the parking brake stalling rule is for manual transmissions.

Common sense should dictate that your battery shouldn't be rattling around your engine bay. Do you really need someone to tell you that?

Common sense should dictate that your first aid kit should have more than tissues and Immodium AD.

If you can't figure this stuff out and realize that I'm trying to be as reasonable and accommodating as possible, then perhaps you should stay home.

Im not going to drive 1000 miles knowing that whether I get to wheel, is determined by the whims of someone.

If you can't pass my inspection then you shouldn't be on the trail.

BTW, this isnt personal to you. TLCA rubs me wrong (lots of chafing, no happy ending)

And I understand that 100%. But I've been doing this event for the last 12 years and have seen ridiculous stuff on the trail. Some have resulted in damage and injury. It is difficult to put on an event like this and expect everyone to show up "prepared" without some sort of guideline. In that case I'm now in a position of dealing with a possible dangerous situation in the woods while I'm out trying to enjoy myself.

How am I supposed to frame this to appease everyone? It can't be done. We have to follow some sort of guideline. I drove 2200 miles to Cruise Moab from Jersey and I made sure to have a look at CM inspection list before departing. It looked a heck of a lot like ours.
 
I am also not singling out your event over CM or any other TLCA sytle/sanctioned event.

Trust me I understand your position more than you know. I am a safety and environmental consultant, I spend my days keeping my clients (general industry) in compliance with OSHA and EPA.

What's one person's common sense is not so for others. We have no idea you're trying to be accommodating. The rules list doesn't say that. It says you're outlawing every Land Cruiser sent to the US since 1988.

If you have the power to make the list reflect what you're going to be checking then do so.
Battery hold down should be on the list. Tree saver and D rings should very well be on the list depending on the group. Does every truck in a newb group need a fully stocked emergency kit? What does that even mean? What kind of registration does my truck need? In Moab it needs PLPD and a legal plate even if I trailer it. In IL it doesn't because we're not on public roads.

Having your own list that says what you mean and not using TLCA's outdated crappy list would be much more helpful.
 
I spent some time on the phone with our club president and we modified our checklist to be more practical and still fall within TLCA guidelines.

As far as individual vehicle inspections, they will always be up to the discretion of a human at any event. The human makes the final decision and I put my trust in the right people. I stand by their decisions and they are final.

That's about all I've got to say on this. If you still feel it's unreasonable, then we will never find a common ground.
