I finished installing a 5 speed last week. I followed protocol and put in a new clutch disc and plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, rear main seal, etc. I did not change the clutch fork though it has some wear on the points.
I ran the truck for a while and it ran fine - gearbox was a little notchy but it's begun to loosen up.
After a long 2 to 3 hour drive, the clutch starts sqealing loudly. It's loudest when the clutch is released. Off the clutch pedal, no real noise. I removed the inspection plate and took a look at it. The bearing does not spin when the clutch is out although the fingers seem to be scraping a little against the bearing. When the clutch is pressed in, the bearing moves but it squeals like a pig. Sometimes when it's fully in, it does not squeal.
I am assuming that the bearing is a dud and I needed to pull the transmission again? The bearing came in the kit (called the Rhino Pac). It looks different to the Toyota bearing, it's shallower and flatter. I'll admit the new bearing seemed a little stiff even before I installed it and I considered leaving the old OEM bearing on there because it spun nicer and looked beefier.
I guess the question I have it whether I can just replace the bearing with an OEM part or is it better to get rid of the Rhino Pac altogether and just get the OEM clutch and plate? I am concerned they are a set given the different shape of the Rhino bearing. Otherwise, is there some way of adjusting this out?
Primarily goal is to not to have to pull the tranny again.
