Started on the clutch, just don't know how to get the tranny away from the bell housing?

As I recall, it was just STABBED in.
You got all the bolts dc'd, right?

Got the darn thing out...man...even drew blood, Sweet! Assuming the thing on the end of the shaft is what's left of the pilot bearing

NICE JOB!
It was just stabbed into the motor, right?
That was how mine came out as well when I did it.

Bayshore Trucking. I have had two of my flywheels turned there. Good guys and they do great work.

Nice pilot bearing.:D

When going back together, just make sure you have the alignment tool, put it all together, tighten everything down, slide the tranny back into place. Pretty much goes back together the same way you took it apart. The only difference is "aligning" the clutch disc in the pressure plate, so that the tranny will slide back into place.

Tried Bayshore, but their machine was Ka-Put and they referred me to Reno Clutch who did a nice job on the flywheel. Amazing how much time it is taking to clean the 40 years of **** off of the tranny/transfer case.

I like to run a small bead of silicone around the top of the bellhousing on V-8's in case the intake ever leaks, it keeps the oil out of the clutch. Might be something that can do if it makes you feel good.

I also like to use some sort of moly based grease on the splines, but not very much. Basically enough to make the surface shiny. Some use graphite, which I've used as well. It helps the input shaft live a little longer in higher abuse applications and makes clutch engagement/disengagement smoother since the disk is more free to separate from the flywheel. Make sure any grooves are cleaned up and the edges smoothed in case your new disk rides in just a little bit different spot than the old one.

Same for the input sleeve where the throwout bearing rides. I prefer grease there, since it doesn't spin like the input shaft does. Doesn't hurt to polish it up a little either.

Sealing up the throwout bearing lever sometimes helps keep sand and mud out of the clutch. Water doesn't seem to hurt them too severely, but mud can really screw things up in there if you're into that sort of thing...

Next time try EZoff, oven cleaner works wonders on T-cases an knuckles.

Wish I new about the little guy in the front earlier, the guys in the back row are really good at cleaning wallets :hillbilly:

Question regarding the grease buildup, does it mainly come from the case breathers?

My new best friend...found huge pile of grease just above the the bellhousing, thinking maybe the valve cover gasket was the main source of all the grease. I replaced the gasket some months ago.

Just be aware that the EZ OFF also takes paint off. If you use it on your engine, the painted components, like my valve covers painted with VHT, will be needing new paint.

It didn't touch the paint on my transmission.

for future reference i think if you purchase your clutch assembly from reno clutch they will surface your fly wheel free, it has been a couple of years sense i used them but that is what they did for me it was part of there warranty
