So i have a 2004 LC and when i come to a hard stop i get a clunking sound.it feels like the rear calipers are sticking or the U joints have some play and clunk. trying to explain it. or the rear shock catching. I know i had a 2007 f150 and when i came to a stop it did the similar clunk and it was the driveshaft and rear chunk seperating and then slamming back in. only fix for it was to lube the crap outta it and ride till it started again. but the LC has zero slop in the drive train. so that is why i am baffled. any ideas....

My Highlander with OEM brake pads and rotors make a clunk on a hard stop because the pads stick to the rotors. Replacement pads/cleaning the pads fixes the clunk on that vehicle. It's especially noticeable in wet weather.

and yes it has been raining today. thanks, next chance i get i will take my wheels off and see how my pads look. could be my excuse for some slotted rotors. ha ha ha.

Does it clunk again when you start forward after the hard stop?

My 05 tundra did this. Turned out to be the splines on the driveshaft. It was corroded and wouldn't slide freely. Only did it after braking aggressively.

While driving into work today i payed close attention. and it is after coming to a stop when i release the brake then the clunk happens.

so really thinking it is brake related.

gt43-- yeah that is what my ford was doing, this is different.

read the thunk/clunk search.

i will do two things. take off my rear wheels and check my pads and calipers.

and grease the **** outta my driveshaft. ha ha ha.

Thanks guys !

let us know if that fixes it. I used to have the clunk when accelerating from a stop, but I just recently started to experience the clunk when coming to a stop

This clunk is without doubt is coming from the front and not from the rear when breaking.

If it was drive terrain related it would be clunking from the get-go. Again when cold, not clunk at all.
When I have been driving to get all heated up, the clunk is back.

This LC had the rear clunk after I greased the drive shafts, now after some time no more.

Can you repeat the clunk when you shift R to D to R to D while stopped with your foot on the brakes? You can likely isolate it more if you have a helper outside hearing or looking.

I did this to isolate my front end clunk. I verified the drivers front axle support arm has the bushing shot. It has a hole in the bushing and is sagging, so the axle has a good 1/2" of movement vertically. I plan to replace it after I first grease the driveshafts to see if it changed anything. $105 part that seems to be a common worn bushing above 150k miles.

You can replace all front axle bushings and 2 support arms for $250.

update

sorry i took so long. kids, honey do's, work. etc......

anyways. i was able to grease up all the u joints and shafts. luckily i have grease fittings. !! made life a lot easier, except for the front, skid plate had to come down. but after all was done. NO MORE CLUNK !!

Thanks guys for your help.

The is awesome, I want to grease all my fitting as well so I don't get the clunk. I have a 2004 LC with 95K on it. Where are all the grease fitting located and what size nipple do you need on the grease gun to do this properly? I have never don it.

Thanks

Glad this has come up again........I stopped buy a shop last week to have my front end and brake system checked out.

Well, the upper control adjustment bolt was loose on the drivers side. This where the clunk was coming from when applying the brakes.

The clunk from the rear of my LC only comes when I freshly grease the drive line. No clunk for some time.
