realized today for the first time a faint clicking noise that is linked to the rev while driving or standing in neutral. so the more rev the faster the clicking gets easy.

it sounds like one of those wooden mill wheel toys spinning in the wind (know what i mean), with the wooden plates clicking against each other. but it is quite faint.

i thought it was from the drivetrain first as it sounded so clear and "out in the open", but now that it does it standing in neutral I am not so sure anymore ;-)

any idea where that could be from? embarking on a major overhaul and want to make sure there is no "big bad news" lurking.

thanks

Felix- My first guess would be valves, but you have prolly already thought of that?? Other than that, I had a '67 GTO with a faint clicking, which increased as the engine speed, and the distributor had an odd "jumping" slightly up and down as it rotated. After the engine seized, I figured out that the oil pump was frozen :bang:(the car had sat for a couple of years before I bought it), and the clicking was from the drive gear jumping out of the slot in the oil pump as the distributor turned. Hope yours is something less serious, or that you catch it earlier than I did. :cheers:Ned

hey ned, thanks for that. only know what valves sound like on a petrol engine (got a '72 merc) so that could be it, but it sounds like it's coming from the lower half somewhere, also not sure.

it's going to the mechanic in the next few weeks anyway, but they don't always find everything so thought it'd be useful to have a pointer. if it's valves I bet they can tell straight away. any other stuff that could be going on?

Believe it or not a minor exhaust leak sounds like a click.... Anyway it does to my old deaf ears.
