i have some chrome motorcycle trim pieces that have some sporadic surface rust. I can live with the surface being less than perfect, so I am looking for suggestions on how to get the rust off without damaging the chrome, and then how to prevent the rust coming back afterwards other than silver touch up paint.

anyone figure this out?

Aluminum foil. Just rub it where the rust is. I live near the ocean and use it when my chrome starts showing rust.

Have you ever tried Flitz?
I used to use it when we lived in Ak. to clean up aluminum and other metal pieces that had started looking bad. At the time, I just used paper towels but now it looks like they sell a polishing cloth for it too.

Worked well for me.
Flitz Metal, Plastic, & Fiberglass Polish

Check your local parts store for "wadding polish". Use a small (very small) piece at a time, it basically looks like a can full of cotton. Pinch off a piece, polish like crazy, you'll be amazed.

I know you can get your stuff re plated in chrome. Another option is to get them ceramic coated. IIRC my powdercoater does chroming, but I might be mistaken.

yeah ... this stuff is GREAT!

I used a brand called NeverDull

Makes chrome shine and it leaves a slight oil that protects the chrome

A buffing wheel on a bench grinder works a treat. Works alot better and is alot easier than polishing by hand.

Neverdull seems to work very well, and is available at most hardware stores. I am not sure whats in it, but after using the cotton, let the chemical in it dry on the surface until dull, then buff lightly with a rag.

Brasso works too. Its a true metal polish.

To get rid of light pitting and surface rust I use a fine! brass wool. Chrome is much harder than steel so you could use steel wool without scratching.
