Well, this certainly wasn’t the plan, but nearly one year into my experience with this wonderful machine, I am no longer in a place that I can support the LC hobby/addiction with time or energy (5-mo old baby at home, and an impending job change can do that…). I will try to detail everything a prospective purchaser would want to know; The Basics
· 1994 FZJ80 – clean, rust-free, always in California, factory equipped with lockers, leather, sunroof, tow package, etc.
· I purchased at the beginning of December 2010 for $4900 with ~182,000mi, as a clean, stock mall/family Cruiser that had been well-maintained
· Goal was to build a balanced dual-sport rig that could safely, reliably, and comfortably take my family up to the mountains for weekends, and do some fun trails in the Sierra as well (i.e. no sacrificing road manners for extreme wheeling) – to that end, there have been some mods, and some repairs/PM’s;
o Mods: de-running boarded and de-flared, Man-A-Fre level stance 3/2 lift kit installed with extended stainless steel brakelines, new Big O Bigfoot A/T 285/75/16 tires (5X), spare tire leveling kit, driver’s seat rail extender kit, Scion T1803 stereo
o Repairs/PM: new OEM Toyota hood & liftgate struts, O2 sensors, heater valve, thermostat, radiator hoses, DS window belt molding, Samco silicone hose & constant torque clamp kits for PHH & FHH, shop-installed all-aluminum radiator (no plastic tanks)
The Details
I have previous owner records of the below;
· Purchased 12/15/98 in Los Angeles for $28,730.29 with 66,394mi (he says he was second owner, but I haven’t felt the need to pull a Carfax to check…)
· 5/16/06 – minor body repairs for fender and tailgate dings
· 6/21/06 (163,525mi) – new power steering pump, seal, oil, 2 brake rotors and pads
· 5/28/09 (173,811mi) – replace water pump and coolant, A/C compressor, drive belt, exaition (sp?) valve, drier, flush & fill w/ R134A
· 2/15/10 – new ignition rotor, distributor cap
· 6/9/10 – frt brake pads, fluid, frt rotor
· 10/10/10 – rr brake pads, rr rotors
Since my ownership, I have records of the following;
· 12/20/10 (182,500mi) – oil & filt change (Mobil 1 High-Mileage & Fram TG3614)
· 12/22/10 (182,709mi) - CA Smog check (from change of ownership) – PASS, and tech was impressed how smoothly and cleanly she ran for her age/miles (I was very happy about this, of course…)
· 12/27/10 (182,957mi) – 5 new Big O Bigfoot A/T LT285/75R16 tires w/ 50k mi warranty [$1102.44]
· 1/8/11 (183,396mi) – replaced hood and rear liftgate supports [OEM Toyota - $315.13]
· 1/17/11 (183,600mi) – replaced front windshield wipers, air filter, interior map light bulb
· 4/24/11 (185,255mi) – replaced both O2 sensors [OEM Toyota - $228.03], installed spare tire leveling kit by Adam Rutherford on IH8MUD (awesome – tucks a 285 spare nicely with no hanging down), installed extra legroom driver’s seat bracket kit by Rick on IH8MUD, repaired passenger seat with new nylon gears from Gamiviti
· 5/29/11 (185,771mi) - oil & filt change (Mobil 1 High-Mileage & Fram TG3614)
· 6/14/11 (187,075mi) – installed Man-A-Fre Toyota level-stance 3/2 lift kit (80 Series Level Stance Suspension Kits) with radius arm bracket kit for caster correction, sway bar drop brackets front and rear, and extended stainless steel brake lines [$1,429.06]
· 9/10/11 – installed Samco silicone hose w/ Breeze constant-torque clamp kits for PHH & FHH (index) [
· 10/24/11 (187,087mi) – radiator replacement by local shop Scotty’s Automotive using all-aluminum (no plastic tanks – I cracked one of these on the original when installing the lift kit by accidentally dropping a tool…) radiator, and OEM Toyota radiator hoses, thermostat and gasket, heater valve, and Toyota Red coolant (all except radiator sourced by me) [$675.89 from shop + $228.83 other parts]
· 10/26/11 (187,103mi) – wheel alignment by Big O shop to ensure 50k mi treadwear warranty is maintained [$79.99]
· 11/6/11 – replaced DS window belt molding, old one had been falling apart and annoying me…
There are some other goodies that I can’t find receipts for, like the Scion T1803 stereo that I installed, cool little automatic tire deflators, new Japanese 555 tie-rod ends from Cruiser Outfitters, the cool long-barrel lug nuts, Toyota Field Service Manual, and other things that may come to mind later…
Basically, this truck drives great, and is well on its way to becoming what I had wanted, but I have no time to play with it or work on it anymore. She has only been on off-road excursions twice in her life, and has been dead-reliable doing the 180-mile, 7500ft elevation roundtrip to Tahoe many times. Wouldn’t hesitate to jump in and drive her anywhere.
All the key items are in great working order
· original head gasket, showing no signs of weakness, engine is strong with no puffs of white smoke on startup
· tranny shifts solid
· lockers engage quickly
· A/C blows cold, rear heater blows hot
And with some additional mods she could be a really cool rig (sliders maybe, to start?). As with any 17-year old vehicle, not everything is perfect;
Known Mechanical Issues
· Starter sometimes slow to engage (i.e. several tries required) in sub-freezing temps, never been an issue in warmer weather, and never caused me to be stranded
· DS and PS windows slower than I would like, especially when very cold
· DS and PS seatbelt retraction is slower than I would like
· Dashboard ‘D’ light out
Known Cosmetic Issues
· Some ‘trail pinstriping’ from the two off-road excursions, I’m sure the majority would buff out but haven’t had time
· Never sealed up holes left from removing fender flares
· Front leather seats in good condition, some cracking on upper portions, middle row decent condition with some sun damage, third row like new
· When I trimmed the dash to make room for the Scion T1803 stereo, I overtrimmed a bit – the gap is not bothersome to me now, but it could be filled with trim pieces if desired
· The truck originally had the fake wood appliqué on internal panels – I have been in process of gradually removing it, but there is still some residue
That’s about all I have time/memory for now – if I remember anything more I will add to the original post. I have over $9k into the truck now, and feel that it should be a good deal at $7500 firm. Please, no lowballers – I will open up to Craigslist and Fleabay when I am ready for that. I would rather that this truck goes to an owner who appreciates what an FZJ really is, so I will leave this on Mud for a week or so before trying other avenues.
Only trades considered are for Tundra CrewMax 5.7 4x4…
Any questions that others would like to know as well, please reply to the thread, otherwise for interest please PM me.

Thanks!

Where in Ca? Sac area? Sweet rig but a hair outa my price range (damn!)

Yup, Sac area, thanks for asking

Roseville, CA to be specific.

EZ fly 'n drive for those of you out of the area. SMF is 20mi away, and I would be happy to pick up.

Cheers,

Chris

Anybody wanna fly to Sac this weekend to check 'er out?

Going on Craigslist tomorrow...not looking forward to that... :frown:

ahhh, good questions, thanks bugsnbikes

But wait...don't you already have a 94? :p

As far as I know, those are all original. Front-axle rebuild was on the to-do list just because it is a good PM (pics on this reply show current condition, not too bad - also good shots of the new Japanese 555 tie rod ends). Ujoints generally will result in sloppiness and vibration when they are going bad, and I don't feel any of that, so I think they are good - maybe just a re-grease would be a good measure. Fan clutch doesn't seem to make much noise, and the rig runs cool even in 110 deg Sacramento heat, so I don't think there should be any issues there. Fuel filter - hmmmmm, I know this is a good PM, but I'm not sure how to check for condition of existing? Maybe check fuel pressure at the fuel rails? In any case, these would all be the type of things I would expect to do at some point, but with the family and job situation have no time....so up she goes to find a good home that can provide all that.

The third picture is my rig (I call her Lanny...) next to a stock FZJ that happened to be at the Toyota dealer today when I was test-driving Tundras. Nice comparison of this build vs. stock - I like to call it a Goldilocks setup: not too big & crazy, not too small, but just right...:cheers:

Seriously though, at this ride and tire height some decent trails can be conquered, yet it drives nice around town and on the freeway, can actually keep up when going uphill into the mountains, and fuel mileage isn't too bad. Fits in a normal garage too!

And btw I spec'd out the Tundra that I want, so let's go guys! I know this is the perfect ride for someone on here. Help me get my CrewMax!

If I'm off-base on market value price let me know and I can be flexible, let's just find a fair number for everyone and everyone drives away smiling...

Nice looking truck, though I think you should have left the faux wood interior trim. How tall of a monkey are you, and does it still have the seat extensions?

Kimio - moving to a Tundra as I don't have time to pursue off-roading anymore, so I don't need the capabilities of the LC in that arena. Also, with a baby at home and a job switch coming up, I just don't have time to monkey around with it. The specific choice was due to the fact that I have a tall family and carry around a lot of stuff, so the interior size of the CrewMax cab is the only thing on the market that actually lets someone sit behind me.

GasHog - The faux wood trim is not a bad thing when in good condition, but after 16 years of deterioration (peeling, fading, yellowing), it had to go... I'm 6'7", and the LandTank seat rail extensions are still on it. Should still be good to go for any normal person as well, as you would have to be less than 5' tall I think to use the forward-most 2" of travel on the stock seat rails.

Saturday bump!

I've got 2 dealers competing for my business for a new Tundra....Lanny needs to find a new home!

:steer:
