Clanking in the drivetrain- any thoughts?

Hi-

My 85 FJ60 clanks when I step on the gas (2WD mode). I just crawled under and the driveshafts and universals turn as one about an inch. This is with the truck out of gear. In gear nothing seems to move. Any ideas or other means of troubleshooting this?

U-joint would be the first suspect. You may need more than just your arms to check the U-joints.

Pinion would be second.

Sounds like a backlash issue on your R&P.
