Howdy All,

With adice from Greg B and others awhile back, I had a 1000W circ heater ordered from NAPA and got a bunch of 3/8" NPT fittings as well. Installed on a 12HT and I must say I would never go back to on of those "block heaters" that go in the frost plugs. The heat is marvellous, and in -20C still almokst have some cab heat on start-up. Thought some of you with 13BTs and 12HTS etc might like to know. VEry simple install off thte block drain, and return to the thermostat bypass hose (actaully removed altoegher and used a 3 way T), need a few feet of heater hose hi-temp. It is so slick... cheers and thanks for the help. FWIW heater cost was $125.

Kewl...

One of the things on the list for my trucks...never seen to get around to it though.

When I had this style on my BJ42 I loved the instant heat as well. While in Calgary for a week in the middle of a cold snap it was able to keep up...

Uh... part#? Picts? Original post?

I missed the original thread... I did a search and found a lot of nothing.

There was no orig thread Gifu. Sorry about that. I asked directly, and put it into this forum so that when people did an archive search, something would show up. I dont have a part# handy but if you phoned NAPA and asked for a tank heater 120V 1000W that circulates by convection I think they would know what your talking about. I will find it and post anyways. I dont have a digital camera of the install, but again I can work on that. How the heck do you put photos on here anyways? Do they have to be in special format or size?

if you have a chance... a part# would be _very_ handy.

At Napa... or any shop around here (SF Bay Area), _anything_ having to do with Diesel get's a blank stare.

Drooling, even.

"I need some glowplugs for a..."
"Glow what?"
"Glow plugs... for a..."
"Hey Bob! Y'all ever here of snow bugs?! This here guy wants a snow bug."
"Glow plug"
"Low tug?"
"Glow plug"
"no rug? oh...i gottcha. you got no rug. well, we don't do carpet."

so... can someone quickly explain what a "tank heater" is? Does it warm the tanks on the radiator? Does it go in the fuel tank, and warm the diesel?

Thanks.

I my understanding of it is by calling it a tank heater they can market it to a larger market. All it is is a really high output block heater in its own casing and resevoir. You connect it to a couple of the coolant lines and the water circulates on convection currents.

Cheers

Hi,

I am trying very hard (or I should say my computer wiz friend) to try and get my digital camera to work on my computer ...hopfully pics soon. Part #40039 NAPA - and yes it is called a Tank Heater. Part #above if for a 1000W - there is a 1500W available too I think, which I would have no worries installing either as it supposed to get to -34 here by Friday ...damn. Hope this helps, and yes, Dude I did get you message. Find your block drain - it is behind the turbo on the 12HT (you have to get underneath to see it) :) Go to Napa get your heater, and also :

3/8 NPT threaded on both ends
a 40 degree elbow 3/8
a 3/8 to 5/8 adapter
then 5/8 nipple
6 feet of hi-temp 5/8 heater hose
5/8 3 way tee (I used copper)
bunch of SS hose clamps

going 3/8 to 5/8 doesnt seem to starve to heater - I was worried about that.....
get all fittings teflon taped and ready BEFORE removing bklock drain. use elbow to aim to inlet hose well out of way of turbo (towards where you want the heater to be). Keep it low as possibel and vertical. Tap outlet (hot end) into the bypass hose - I reomved the stock hose and built a new one with the 3 way tee that provided the outlet to get plugged into the highest possible point on the block. I'll try and take a pic of this and get it on here. Read the suppied instructions too! If in doubt or dont want the coolant mess when tapping block drain, then take to mechanic - should be 1hr job. Hope this helps you guys!

Hmmm... that part # comes up as a muffler.

the local Napa _kinda_ knows what I'm talking about... but can't find a "Tank Heater" or "Circulation Heater".

i got a nice 1000w one from jcwhitney. they had different choices of wattage.
