The previous owner of my FJ60 was a heavy smoker and the rig smells like an ashtray. I have been across it with Armor-all, vacuum cleaner, and some upholstery cleaner that smells like a French whore house but it still smell like smoke. All the interior is still in place including the headliner (1986). Any suggestions? (The wife wants to know how I know what a French whore house smells like)
A dealer I bought a smoked in car from used an ozone machine to clean it up. Worked pretty well but some "new car smell" spray and time was needed for a while too.
Seems like there are prolly products made specifically for removing cigarette odor - do a google search maybe? Industrial cleaning supplies? Hotels and rental car companies have to deal with this...
Or, you could try the universal odor eater - coffee. I'm not joking. Buy a cheap pound of coffee grounds, spread it around the carpet, seats, etc. Let it sit for a day - then vacuum up. Coffee really does absorb odors, and worst case is that the car will smell more like coffee than cigarettes.
Of course, I'm sure there is the smell of coffee in french whore houses, so this may not help with the wife question...
I've spoken with an auto broker about this, she recommends the ozone machine as well. I think I've seen less expensive versions that plug into a cigarette lighter, maybe try Sharper Image or Brookstone?
I had a car in high school that smelled like the PO's cigarettes. Try spilling a bunch of 3.2 beer in it. Worked for me.
Take it to a car wash, or rent a steam cleaner. Do all interior surfaces. Many newer car washes have one station that has one out by the vacs....does wonders.
And go over the hard surfaces again. DON't neglect to get the smell out of the vents, the recirculating part sucks it into the system....
Spill some 90# gear lube in it. You'll long for the days it smelled like smoke.
Or try the pet store. They sell some stuff called out! that kills odors, we used it when we were house breaking our dog. Makes the whole joint smell like a cheap hotel for a day or two. Then nothing.
FWIT a French Whore house smells just like a teenage girl who spent the afternoon at the perfume counter in Sears.
I have had good success with Fabreze. Spray liberaly, keep the truck closed for a day or so with hot sun, then open it up for a day or two, repeat untill it's gone.
I've never found anything that works better than OdoBan. It has a pretty odd odor from the chemicals, but those will go away in a day or two. Spray liberally (like Fabreeze) and let it sit for a day.
You can get OdoBan at your local Wal-Mart. Personally hate the place but it is the only non-commercial vendor for the stuff.
Park it in a sunny spot, spray half a can of Ozium in and close the door, let it bake for a day, then open all the doors and roll down the windows. Here's the important part, don't enter the car for at least an hour or two of letting it air out unless you want to be coughing for a couple of days
I second or third the Febreze. Buy the unscented. My truck smelled like Jabba the Hutt with gastric distress when I bought it, now it only smells like my ass.
Rip out every square inch of fabric, carpeting, headliner, and all the seat cushions. Throw them away. Go buy new ones. There ya go.
Depending on how sensitive you are to the smell, you may never get it out. A cowoker bought a really nice used VW TDi for his wife, but it smelled like cigarettes inside. The dealer gave them a 30 day guarantee that their detailer would get rid of the smell. They tried every single trick known to man, but they ended up taking the car back.
Bought our 62 after chasing its owner for literally eight years or so. The entire time, they had a ash tray the size of a dinner plate on the console, constantly full. We don't smoke...picked up an odor "bomb" type item at the local janitorial supply...didn't need to use it but a few seconds, shut all the doors and windows, walk away for twenty four hours. Still can't smell any smoke in it, and it was beyond horrible. Let me know if you don't find anything, I can hook you up.
