I did some search here, there is a wealth of detailed information but for this general question I came up with nothing.

We explore back roads throughout Alaska, Western and Northern Canada. IE. long days far from cell service and a tow, huge cross stitches on abandoned back roads, routes closed in with trees and bush, comfy enough for my girlfriend to enjoy driving 40 km of logging roads to the family cabin on the lake. We hike a lot, our destinations are to scout hikes or possible routes, and base camp for hiking. We have reached a point these last few years when most often we 2 up on dual sport/adventure bikes because; full sized American trucks are not great for this being too long, too low for all that length, not that well-built, use too much gas in 4×4, and really are not great off-road vehicles/ small SUV’s, practical but limited clearance, and also all these vehicles are ready poor resale value is worsened by our adventures. Considered a Toyota Tacoma, with its better than domestic resale value would be hurt with the abuse we will inflict.

So we want a Landcruiser (again). 24 years ago I sold my FJ45 years ago, and miss that rig. I have test driven both used 70 Series (too small inside) and near new Lexus LX 570 (too nice to crawl). So I have decided to buy either an 80 or 100 Series. I already buy vehicles from Japan for import to Canada, so lower mileage examples are available. We have driven both over the past month, and we can not decide! Honestly can not pick one over the other, to the point where I am considering importing one of each to drive both on a longer term. I am a fan of the 1HK-T engine. Suggestions?

80-series JDM with 1HD-T fitted with second tank. Try to find one under 250k km and good condition. Plenty of bush builds in the 80-series tech forums.
