Hey guys. Every now and then my choke will stick and I can't pull it. It almost feels like there's a vacuum at work. Sometimes (most) it will be as smooth as butter.

Any ideas? Can I lube it?

Check the choke cable first to make sure it's not binding up on anything where it goes through the firewall.

If it's clear there, I don't see any problems with dousing the mechanism with a bunch of cleaner, then lube.

jhstatts, look on the carb where the cable attaches. This is on the firewall side of the carb. See if the cable is tightly screwed (clamped) to the carb. If not it might be binding or getting cought on the clamp. JMHO.

Photogod and Benji... thanks.

I just ran down and checked for binding. It doesn't appear to be getting hung up anywhere. It just feels stiff sometimes. I think it might just need a good cleaning and lube.

How about using WAHL clipper oil... I think it is very similar to gun oil.

Go to this sight for the best lub/penetrant ever. I have used this stuff on everything I own including all my firearms! This stuff is great. www.kanolabs.com Kroil in the spray is very convenient.

It might actually be fraying and sticking inside the housing, so maybe a simple lube won't do the trick. (Mine did that right where it passes over the manifold--the heat eventually promoted corrosion.)

There's no way to know until it goes, though, so be prepared to have to go "fully manual" on the choke until you get it replaced. When it happened to me, I'd simply pop the hood, pull the remaining piece of cable with my hand, start it up, then eventually let go. Lots of laughs for the neighbors, but it worked.

jhstatts,

Check the cable clamp at the carb.

Find the black cable housing where it comes out of the firewall and trace it to the end. There should be a ferrul on the end of the cable housing. The ferrul should be secured to the carb housing at a clamp. Mine had slipped and had to be re-positioned to work correctly. Had similar problems to what you have described.

Gonna have to climb on top of da' motor too to see. Darn cable clamp is on the far side of the carb. Or use mirror.

Cheers,
Cahil

Cahil... thanks. I will check on this tonight. The choke stuck on me again this morning, but she started right up without the choke.
