Chile Challenge is a great event around the Las Cruces area. I've only been once, but it was my first real off-road event back in 2003. Several of us have attended over the years, but I think it's time to ramp up our attendance in 2008. You need to get busy on your truck so it will done by the end of February!

The weather down there at that time of year is just right. Should be temps in the 70's and time to get the shorts out after the long winter. Go to the home page for the Las Cruces 4WD club, and poke around - you can find some descriptions of trails.

There's not much there yet for event details, but I'm sure they will have more as we get closer to the event. Chile Challenge is not a Toyota event, as a matter of fact, it is dominated by J**ps, but it's good for us Toyota guys to show up to show them what our rigs can do.

Christo and hs crew will usually show up for the extreme trails. I did the moderate trails last time several years ago and they were pretty hard for "moderate", given an almost stock Cruiser and a very inexperienced driver. I should be ready to move up to the "hard" trails now, but the extreme are very hard core. I remember Christo and the Short Bus getting towed out last time after breaking something.

Let's get it on our calendars and see how many of us HDc folks can get down there. It's only a three hour drive, and it's some fun wheeling. When I was there last, they set up some good discounts on hotels and I'm sure there will be camping available as well.

I will be down there again in 2008. Last year was my first time at the Chile Challenge and I had a great time. Broad Canyon was my favorite, beautiful trail and there was a wide variety of lines to choose from in the bottom of the canyon. This allowed the more built vehicles to wheel with their friends without getting bored.
 
Speaking of runs, We're heading down to the Chile Challenge - Moab isn't looking good for us this spring (Columbus day is, though...)

We'll probably do moderate or hard runs - nothing extreme... Anybody else going?

You guys that have been down there, how do the trails compare with Moab?

Also, does anyone know where the "playground" is, I think on Broad Canyon? Keun's going and taking his RC 40 with some friends - they're going to take them out there there on Sunday... He may drive his Rubicon (I know, I know... the dark side...)
 
Ohh, didja read on their website that this might be the last one? 'land use issues'...
 
i'm planning on it. i just got the days off from work. i'm planning on signing up for the trails with the 2 guys i work with that own the unimogs. that means extreme trails most likely. i'll let you know if i can convince them of a hard trail too. the hard trails i ran weren't too bad, of course they have probably changed significantly since then. most had a moderate level through everything with hard options everywhere.

well, i have a first! i will be atteding the Chile Challenge ALONE!:eek: no wife, no kids. and she's not mad at me either.:steer::cool::grinpimp::bounce::clap::D :beer: :wrench::beer:

so, if anyone wants to come ride along with me, you are welcome. i will be camping it at the fairgrounds/event central sleepin in my Ford for the lower cost ($12 per night). you can make your own sleeping arrangements, pitch a tent on my site or crash in the truck bed too.

i think i have the mog guys convinced to do 2 extreme trails and 2 Hard trails. i'll post up the final choices when we are solid.
 
I am considering going, and have it penciled in, but I probably won't register until just before the early deadline of 1/28. I will probably go up Friday afternoon, and only do a run on Saturday of the easy runs of "Box Canyon" or the "Spectator run" on Saturday, with a return either Saturday night or early Sunday. Since this is my first big event, I am even considering just going down there to camp, watch, and hopefully tagging along with someone here on a difficult/extreme trail.

Curious, can these trails be driven any time or only during the Chille Challenge? If so, why don't I hear of anyone heading down there any other time?
 
they are open year round, but you kinda have to know the area or have someone that does guide you. i found it hard to find my way around, lots of turn offs and unmarked roads (nothing is marked). i have a friend that knows someone that lives (and wheels) in Cruces and can be a guide. if Chile Challenge stops happening, we could go that route.
 
I forgot to mention - if you want to maximize your chances of taking some of the same trails (and as Shawn says, it's good to learn the place because this may be the last "official" Chile Challenge) you need to get your app to Shawn this week. They give priority to those turning in apps together.

I'm not sure when Shawn is going to actually mail it in (?)
 
The Chile Challenge is great fun with a ton of vehicles and good trails. I hope to see you guys down here!

it looks like (after some tough negotiating) we have some awesome trails to run! i will run with Steve on Saturday. i have Allyn coming to ride along with me. i sold him an oil pan and he obviously lurks here cause he saw my offer of a seat. at least 2 extreme trail are on my agenda. i will be the little boy of the group (imagine that!) the trail leader we are camping next to runs 2.5 ton rockwell axles and 50" tires!:eek: i am a little intimidated to say the least.:o i know the friends i am running with have done all the extreme trails in their Unimogs.
i hope to come back with some cool video and pics (hopefully not of me on my roof or side:flipoff2:). i feel, if that (roll over), is going to happen to me, this is where it will be.:rolleyes: wish me luck!

for those that don't know us and will be there, i will be with 2 unimogs, 1 orange and 1 yellow. i have a blue FJ40 w/ liscense plate- "Boinic". I'm a bald guy w/ handlebar mustache. come say "HI"! i have been told, we will be next to the the "Scorpion" guys at the fairgrounds camping area. i don't know what that means.
