Raised 5 children in fj-60. Two horrible wrecks,no injuries just using the seat belts to hold the metal car seats. One wreck in which the cruiser fliped 7 times and fell 45 feet down a mountain and landed upside down in a creek bed. Car seat and son hanging from ceiling ,ok. MIke

mike, why don't you let everyone know where that particular stretch of road is... so we can all avoid it. the reason i'm looking for a tether anchor spot is that i like to put him in the middle (frankly, because he'll kick the seats less often), and using just the lap belt still permits it to pivot forward. the tether anchor just makes it more secure, but i'm sure he'd be fine anyhow.

Hi Mike, I feel the same way about the seat belts. When my kids were in car seats (not booster) I used lap belts and tethers. Now that they should be in boosters (according to the Gov't) I can't find any that don't require a shoulder belt. In fact they tell you not to use without a shoulder belt. I researched this (so I don't get a ticket) and found that if the vehicle didn't come with shoulder belts, it was safer to use lap belts without a booster. I have no problem with stock lap belts, I was the kid in the back seat of an old Chevy car that had lap belts only that had a fun ride (not so much) down a steep embankment. Even my folks walked away and they weren't wearing seat belts (I fully endorse using seat belts).

The problem with fitting child restraints is not the attachment point but within the seat structure itself. The back of the seat is not strong enough for a tether to be fitted over the back of the seat and attached to the floor. This is the reason that Australia requires the CRAB (Child Retsraint Attachment Bar) to be fitted. The later 62 seats are upgraded and strengthened, thus the tether attachment in the seats themselves.

I had an expensive seat,my wife would know the brand. We flipped in Hot Springs, Arkansas during an ice storm. We knocked down quite a few trees. We also had to crawl back up the mountain with 5 kids in the ice, no small feet itself. Mike

Are you using the retractable lap belt for that car seat? And if so, how did you get it tight so it would not move around? I just had a second kid and I want to go camping...... Can't leave one at home, if you know what I mean.

No, I have the standard (non retractable) seat belts. The picture isn't actually of my vehicle, but I have exactly the same CRAB bar, although I put the baby seat in the middle. I have another (baby, not 60!) on the way, so they seats will have to go on the sides.

I always thought CRAB was a weird name for the bar - now I know why!
