child seat tether anchors on FJ62?

i'm looking around for an FJ62, and i'm contemplating where to put the child seat. on my current car, i have tether anchors behind the headrest for the tether strap to keep the seat from rocking forward. since that isn't an option on the FJ62, i'll need to install them.

and for those of you who don't know what i'm talking about, this is a tether anchor, and so is this.

i can think of three places: on the back of the seat, on the floorboard in the cargo area, or in the ceiling/headliner. all of these would require me finding some sort of metal to drill the anchor into. the seatback and cargo floorboard are not ideal because it means that when i fold the seats down to use for hauling around stuff, i'll have these anchors sticking up and hooking things.

what about the interior ceiling? is there a roll cage or some sort of metal structure under/behind the headliner that would accept a short screw for the tether anchor?

I'm not familiar with the 60 series, but most cars have threaded holes with bolts in them in the floor behind the rear seats for that sort of thing, have a feel around or lift the carpet and see.

Agree. I have a HJ61 with third row seats, and there are a heap of mounts fitted to the floor pan in the cargo area for those.

Where the third-row seats latch, the mounting provision is recessed so you can cargo without removing the mounts.

On my HJ60, there are no mounts but the holes are in the floorpan for it, and so are the threaded holes. There are just blank covers over these mount areas.

I will photo this and post again...

what do y'all think of putting the anchors in the ceiling? is there anything to screw into up there, or is all just the roof sheetmetal -- which i, obviously, wouldn't want to penetrate?

The ceiling (as far as I know) doesn't have these provisions. The sheet metal on the ceiling is fairly thin, I wouldn't trust it as a tethering point. When my kids were using car seats, I used a cargo tie down loop, similar to this:

i have a one and a bit year old. friend had an 87 jimmy without anchors, all we did for his truck was drill a hole in the cargo floor to mount it.... just make sure you do something to rust proof the hole, and use a nice big washer on the bottom side :hhmm:

I just use the lap belt and have been able to get the car seat just as snug as I could in the grandparents' more modern car using the tethers.

Here in Aus the seats in the later 60's had the bolts holes in the back of the rear seats.

For the earlier 60's we have to install a 'Crab Bar'. I have one in mine;

All unnecessary. The 62 has two pairs of tie down hooks (they fold flat or stand up) in the cargo area, one pair just in front of the tail gate, and another just behind the rear seat back. You can tether the kiddie seats through the headrests and down to those hooks. Here's one, in the pic...

Edit: I just saw that post #5 pointed this out.

Do you know if the 60 has the same?

Are you using the retractable lap belt for that car seat? And if so, how did you get it tight so it would not move around? I just had a second kid and I want to go camping...... Can't leave one at home, if you know what I mean.

i use the same bracket that the bench locks into ... i just cut a hole in the carpet in the back and the tether runs down the back of the seat and clips into the same bracket as the bench... have to put the child seat in the center of the bench though..

cheers
