As I mentioned in chat, I think clamshell doors suck for car seats. I haven't had a FJC, but I had an Element with very similar door/seating setup. Other than the door dance, in parking lots with a car parked next to you, the removable infant carrier worked OK.They an issue with the FJCruiser? Bigger pain to take in and out?
Once the baby outgrows the carrier, you go to a rear facing seat (~6 months old), We had to enter the vehicle from the other side of the car, get in the back and then put the baby in the car seat.
Once they get to a forward facing car seat, you don't have to get in the opposite side, but it is a reach to lift them up and buckle them in.

I found the rear facing seat awkward, however when we went to the forward facing seat it was/is a breeze.
