Greetings from Illinois! Tech question for you guys. The factory in line 6 in my `67 FJ40 is getting tired so I decided to replace it w/ a Chevy 327. Through research, I've figured out most of the tricks,.. but I have a column shifter.
My question, is it possible to make this work, or do I go with the floor shifter? Anything is possible if you want it bad enough, but I don't mind either way. I see Spector has a floorshift kit, but it's $300, plus other parts. I would just assume keep the column shift, but will the headers fit? Just looking for some input on what's the best way to go w/ it. Any other conversion tips are GREATLY appreciated!
Best regards,
Mark

Why use headers?

Bolt on manifolds and go. If you're worried about loss of HP then don't use a 327. 3 speed trans is not known for strength anyway so, if you must have a small block, consider a 4 speed.

Thank you for that reply sir. I didn't think of that because I have a pair of headers for the motor and not manifolds!
I had to try one of those icons. I'm open to any other tips out there. Hopefully have it installed in the nexst few weeks.
Take care!

It should still work, but the engine swap will move your tranny back. That means all of the linkages for your tranny and t-case will need to be reworked. You will also need to replace your speedo cable and maybe the e-brake as well.

On one of my old cruisers I got real good at replacing 3 speed trannies, because the sbc 327 ate them up. Dont forget to add a t-case saver. You could save yourself lots of work in the future, by not using headers.

good luck

Speaking of speedo and e brake cables, I planned on replacing both while I was at it. I planned on having to modify lots of stuff including the driveshafts? But the cables, if needed to be longer,..does Spector or similiar co. have extended cables? I know I bought one once that was for a 1`67 and it came up short.
I will take your advice and look into the t-case saver. I see it here in the catalog.

ALSO,..PLEASE I just thought of it. Does anyone know of or have some nice pics of a sbc mounted in a cruiser? I'm a little unsure how the rear mounts are going to work out. I have a front mount bracket for the sbc, but that's all I have. I was planning on installing the motor and trans, let it hang and fabricate something to hold up the ass end. There's not many cruisers in my area so I'm going it my own. There's plenty of info on the web, but pictures say athousand words.

Thanx again for the tips guys. I keep checking in on this post while I'm turning wrenches in the next room!
Have a great day!
