I noticed that almost all of the "chrome" on the mirrors, grill and trim of my fj62 has flaked off and looks like poo-Has anyone found a cheap fix for this? (other than black spray paint!)

I spent half of today working on that exact problem.
I got a rust/paint remover wheel for my drill. Removed all of the flaking chrome from the grill and other pieces. Then sprayed them down with a adhesion primer and then a couple of coats of buildup primer. My plastic has some cracks in it and I am trying to get it somewhat smooth. If yours in not cracked up then you can spray whatever top color you want on top of the adhesion primer. So far it has only cost me $30 for the wheel and paint. Alot better than a replacement.
