UZJ100 Service Announcement

I replaced the driver side, bank 1, senor 1 O2 sensor this morning. I noticed there was oil seepage near my valve cover gasket bolts. I checked and ALL 16 were hand loose. Unbelievable. I went and tightened all 16. I would recommend this PM check to everyone. I need to pull them out and use some mild lock tight but that will have to wait to another day.

Check you valve cover bolts!

what did you torque them to....id imagine the spec is in in/lbs.........too tight=leaks as-well

I do not have a torque wrench that small. I need to do that as well. I just tightened them a little. Snugged them up as we say down south.

Can someone please comment on the correct torque specs on this?

98 FSM EM-66 has ...

"Install the cylinder head cover with 18 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes"

Torque: 6.0 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf)

I wouldn't put thread locker on them. The VC gasket shrinks over time as it ages/hardens and the bolts end up loose as a result (since the gasket is essentially what you are tightening the bolts against as it's sandwiched between the VC and the head). Snugging the bolts back down should be sufficient. I replaced the gaskets on mine but a simple retorque seems to work fairly well also.

Thanks to this thread, I checked mine today. They were all finger tight at 135K. Thanks for the heads up.

Threadlocker wouldn't stop you from snugging them down later, might keep them from rattling all the way out.

I know this is old...but I just checked mine and saw oil seepage and realized that they were so loose, I could tighten them by just grabbing the socket and twisting it with my hands before adding the ratchet.

Dont over tighten em. Mine were loose as well but they are not supposed to be super tight.

I can't seem to get to all of mine on the DS. Meh

If exhaust side, take off the upper fender apron by the UCA. Obviously, you'll have more room to work over the tire if you've lifted the front end.

Lift as in crank the T-bars FYI.

Bringing this back up folks. I just had this happen. PS was replaced 2 yrs ago because it was leaking. DS was leaking now and when I checked the bolts all were loose. Went ahead and retorqued them. Waiting on new bolts and gasket now.

Like @uzj100 said check’em
