So...

The time has come to build some sliders for my 2000 UZJ100 and I needed to purchase some steel. I called Metal Masters (as recommended by many) and then decided to call Johnson Iron up here in Truckee. I was hoping that the price would be close enough to justify not driving to Reno.

Well..... As it turns out, the price for 1.75" x .120 HREW tubing was exactly half of Metal Masters (unless I really messed something up)

Metal Masters was $72 for a 20' stick
Johnson Iron was $36 for a 20' stick

Who would've thought steel would be cheaper in Truckee than Reno?

That's it for now, I'll update when I actually start building my sliders.

I havent been terribly happy with metal masters lately...
If you talked to a guy named Shawn, he is pretty new, and isnt quite...well...the sharpest pencil in the box so to speak regarding steel and fab (ironically). However, Ive been suspicious that they had raised their prices too and I will be calling around for prices the next time Im in need.
To give you an example...a couple of days ago I needed some 5 inx 4 ft 3/16 plate. I called metal masters and Shawn quoted me 54 bucks...
I asked if there was an alternative possibly...maybe some flat stock that was 5 or 6 in x 3/16 thick..."Oh, yeah...its 21 dollars"..."lemme check to see if we have any..." The issue was, that I needed TWO pieces in those dimensions and I WAS NOT about to pay over a hundred buck for that. Ill ILLEGALY go dumpster diving for that before I pay that kind of money.

Another example. I was looking for some tubing with AT LEAST a 1/2 in ID with a 1/4 in wall thickness. 3/4 would have been okay...I called and got Shawn. Long story short..."Naw man, we'd have to special order something like that....You might wanna try HOME DEPOT.":eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::bang::bang::bang:

ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME!?!?!?!?!?!

I ended up going to proto fab and got EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Well that sucks.

To bad Reno Salvage got out of the steel business.

Wasn't there another place?
Desert Steel or something?

Sam just told me about a place on Valley Road right across the street from the salvage business. I haven't been there yet to check it out...but he said they have all kinds of bizarre metal. Not sure if they cut to order or what. Sam mentioned they have all kinds of boxes of various metals for X$...take the whole lot for el cheapo.

I'm going to need a small piece of steel...maybe I'll swing by there next week. Matter of fact Dan...we should go there and then go to the Zagol for lunch!

No worries on dumpster diving being illegal...It's not. ;) Knock yourself out.

Even if there is a sign posted that I "didnt even notice"

There is a place where I have found LOTS of REAAAAAAAALY GOOD scrap reliably! However, the last time I went, there were signs posted....Kind of deterred me a little bit. I think it would be a little embarrassing to get busted for that.

I'll p.m. you.

S&S on Valley is an offshoot from the salvage operation *I think*.

They do have some forms of scrap, but it's as is. They cannot cut anything.

I stop by every so often just to see what's in stock as it changes fairly frequently. Rarely have I bought anything however.

Zagol is a little overpriced, even for Ethiopian. Just down the street towards Sparks is Casale's 1/2 way house for Italian fare(1/2 way between Reno and Sparks - that's how long it's been there). And don't forget Galletti's Coney Island for lunch.
