I grew up in Oracle, AZ and I've ran this trail many, many times. The trail can be ran from either direction (Oracle to Catalina or Catalina to Oracle) so technically there are two trail heads...

What do you mean by a long wheel base vehicle? A long bed pickup or suburban would have difficulty on the Tucson side (southern half). I've only ran it in 'midsize' trucks or SUV's (88 Toyota Pickup, 89 Isuzu Trooper, 99 XJ, or 77 CJ7). You could do an out and back on the Oracle side in a full size fairly easily and still see some pretty, high desert country.
