When I opened up the housing to change my air filter today, I found several small, rectangular chunks of charcoal (is that what it is?) and a few pieces that looked like small Riffles potato chips. WTF???

I was thinking fresh asphalt if they were on the outside (did you drive down any roads under construction recently?) and rust chunks if it was on the inside (because I have rust chunks and flakes inside of mine)

I guess I'm not being clear. When the air filter housing lid was removed, and I pulled out the air filter, these chunks were sitting there. They couldn't be road pieces as that's a sealed space. They have blown in from some part of the engine. Charcoal canister maybe?

i'm going to stick with my responce. If you take off the "lid" on the air filter box, reach in and remove the air filter, there are black chunks on the bottom of the filter box. Mine has had rust chunks in there, I guess its from the rubber seals not sealing all the way.

(outside air side of filter)....air flows into air box, heavey dirt and junk falls to the bottom of air box, dusty air and leaves hit the paper filter, stuff is filtered and air goes into carb.

(carb side of filter) If there is stuff on the inside my experience has been it's rust pieces.

I have seen the same thing before in my air box.

I would check the following..

Make sure you have a good vacuum at the hose on the top of the PCV valve at idle. If you are getting a lot of blowby the line can get clogged with this carbon crap you are seeing and then the engine can't breath. When this happens you get a lot of crap coming through the vent on the back on the valve cover that goes in the air filter housing.

Check and make sure your smog pump is pulling air on the hose going to the filter housing at ilde. Take off the smog pump line and see if there is oil and carbon in them.

I'm thinkin' it's chunks of smog pump vanes................

are they flat like small crackers?

Its the smog pump vane wipers. If there are chunks in the air cleaner, then there are likely chunks in the ABV (air bypass valve) as well. I'd replace or rebuild the pump before the vane fails and jams the pump.

I also found little bits in my air cleaner the other day. I agree with 60 wag and and jefferson-mo, the smog pump is likely the source. If you pull the tube to the smog pump you'll probably find air blowing into the air cleaner when it should be sucking it out (at least i did).

Thanks for the replies! I'm about to head out on a 5-day road trip so I gotta get this checked out. This will be the 3rd smog pump I've put in.

I agree with the smog pump.

I had the same chunks, I also found them in the hoses coming off the smog pump.
I didn't think to check the ABV, something else to do.

When was the last time you checked the air cleaner? It may not be the vanes from this smog pump.

The ABV sits on top of the drivers side wheel well. One of the hoses from the smog pump goes into it (or out).

smog pump sounds like a culprit in my case also, that rusty crap was inside the filter when i first got the cruiser. the pump is long gone.

Well, I think my smog pump is on its way out, but I have no crud in my air cleaner. I have really strong vacuum on the smog pump lineat the air cleaner, but a very pronounced "pumping" noise... sounds clicky. Seems a little too loud.

Vacuum on my PCV valve is strong too. Truck almost died when I pulled it.
