I checked the tranmission fluid on our new 62 my dad bought last week and the level was right on but the color was brown and it smelled really bad..

Im wanting to have the fluid changed but my dad says no. He thinks it will end up seriously harming the transmission or causing more probems than fixing them "you dont change the transmission fluid on a vehicle with 150,000 miles, i drove my other 62 to 270000 without changing it"

Well that being said, I still want to change it/have it changed. But are there any real dangers or reasons why I the tranny fluid should not be changed? Any possibility of harming the transmission at all?

this thread kinda scares me https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=38096&highlight=atf
i definitely dont want my transmission to end up failing a little while later because I had the atf changed.

so as long as i dont do any of the power flushes im good?

There are dangers with any type of tranny power flush.

They are known for killing LC autos in particular, and any high-mileage auto that has not had regular service as well.

It is perfectly safe, and quite advisable to drain and refill the tranny a number of times to "swap" the fluid. I would at least do this.

It would not be a bad idea to drop the pan, (lets you change more fluid at once) and inspect the filter screen. (does not need to be replaced unless damaged, just clean it).
