I have a 1985 BJ73 3B diesel. I am trying to change the Oil Pressure sender unit but I cannot get a spanner onto the nut of the unit to undo it. There is not much room to get a grip on it. I removed the filter hoping that would help but to no avail.

Got tired of the super low oil pressure reading and replaced the oil pressure sending unit today. I know that in reality that it was fine but it was really bugging me, a little peace of mind goes along way sometimes. Overall this is one of those jobs that's not overly difficult or technical but kinda a trick due to the access. Removing the air cleaner lets you look right at it but getting a wrench on it is another story. Finally got a system down, using a crows foot, swivel and ratchet extension. Once I got that figured out it was just a slow 1/4 turn at a time out and the same putting the new one in.

The tool that made it possible
A quick search found this. I also remember seeing a pic where someone cut a wrench to get at it

I got a couple of cheap spanners and cut them to fit! Pita job but well worth it. Have a couple of beers handy! It helps

Do you guys have a better pic where exactly this sender unit sits on a 3B/3BII!? (above the motor mount? same on 3BII?)

I bought one for my BJ70/3BII which never had a sender or even the instrument. After i upgraded the instruments i had no signal to the gauge and i am thinking about that every couple of months ... now i see the opportunity to ask here :)

It is buried between the engine mount bracket and the A/C compressor on the right-hand side of the engine.

As Carpet says have a few beers handy, you'll be wanting them......

I used a 14mm, crow's foot socket (3/8" drive). I had to deepen its reach by cutting into it with a cut-off wheel so it could get more firmly onto the sender's nut. In the photo below I removed metal to get closer to the letters CR-V.
I also reduced the diameter of a 3" extension just back of where the crow's foot was on: this let me get around the rim of the sender better.
After several false starts, I removed the sender by lying under the truck and using the wrench from below.

new one, had to replace one connector

It was quite easy after i removed the oil filter.

Problem now: the oil pressure pointer is gone to valhalla years ago (after i replaced the instrument cluster) ...

Is there a fix for that?
