land of enchantment, at least for now
Not sure if I should start here or the 40 section, seem to be lots of imports in this forum. I was thinking about changing out the combination meter from my 1980 HJ45 to one from a US model FJ40. First question--what is the 3rd prong for in the connector for the ammeter on the 1980 gauge? My US gauge doesn't have the 3-prong connector and I'm not using the ammeter anymore anyway. Do I need that 3rd wire for something?

Next, it appears fuel senders are the same after 1972, so I think the fuel gauge will be okay. What about oil pressure? I assume, but don't know for sure, that this is the original gauge cluster and therefore matched to the sender from an "H" engine. Are they different than what would have been with my 2F gauges?

Using mechanical temp gauge, so not concerned about that one.

thanks,

I just swapped 1980 hj45 instrument cluster from South America to a US model fj40. After researching it on several different FSMs. It was just a simple remove and replace mod. I even added the leds to it. Made a big difference. But I still cannot see the gas needle in the dark. So I will adding a mod to make the part brighter. The one I used did not have third prong for the Ammeter. I believe that would be for an earlier model. If you look at the prong and follow the "run" you can tell it goes to the ammeter. I could see where you could possibly have an issue on the connector. I don't have an fsm with me but you could compare both connectors and if there are difference between the two clusters.

Sorry or the delayed resonsed. I replaced mine with a 79 I believe. I had it in a box and forgot I even had one until I came across it after searching a dimmer switch I thought I had. The third terminal (speed sensor) you described comes from the odometer and goes to your "computer" if it had one. Mine did not have it and so I left it unplugged. If I remember correctly it has something to do with emissions stuff. Have you tried ohming out the pins on the orginal and the doner clusters to see if there any differnces?

I'm converting a nondimming headlight switch to a dimmer one(USA). I noticed it does not match the USA 1980 model. This looks more to be wired like a 74-76 time frame, I'll know more as soon as I locate one.
