Well I got pissed at one of biggest local customers. I found his scrap pile and saw a bunch of my equipment in there.

I pulled most of his "Junk" saws out of the pile and pit them a few boxes and told him to get his butt to my shop any weekend adn we would go through them.

The top picture is what I started with at 8:30 yesterday morning.

The bottom picture is what we built out of his "Junk". We are not done but it was late.

5 - MS200T's $629.00 each
1 - MS 250 $325.00
1 - MS440 - $850.00

There is also a $450.00 Back Blower but I needs to order a part for it.

He is very happy and will be bringing the rest of his "Junk" out next weekend.

We finally found the bless of a stihl after years of the 'pullin pro, and now my grandfather has 7. Which is weird, because only 3 of us are phyically able to run them. So they are pretty much disposable for a day, and then we (mainly I) fix them the next. It came in real handy when we were cut off from civilization for a week do to Ice Storms. At the end of that week, i was intimately connected with those saws. And now, i hate sharpening blades, so i take it to the stihl shop, pay 3 bucks, take it home and let them honor thy glory of a white lie. hehe

i say we were cut off, more or less, you are never cut off if you own a cruiser and stihl. But sadly, we were more worried about our livestock than cutting a 4 mile road into town. I think it would be fun :flipoff2:

Why is it that my husky rancher totally sucks balls? Hardly ever started even when new and now after having it 2 yrs it's a frickin paperweight.

My Husky has paid for itself a hundred fold. I think the Stihl vs. Husky debate is like the GM vs. Ford. If either were as bad at the other one said they'ed both be out of business. Oh that's right GM is almost.

Chain Saws are the highest maintenace piece of equipment you will ever own, if you maintain them as recommended.

The servicing dealer has more to do with Brand Loyalty than anything. If they do not have the parts or you cannot get parts, you may as well have a $69.99 POS that was made in China.

What kind of maintenance are you refering to Dan? I thought all chain saws needed was gas and oil, and a plug ever now and then

The MS200T is the Holy Grail of proffesional arborist saws. That price is correct for that model. Used commercially 30 hours a week you can easily expect 5 to 6 years of life out of them.

Is that price correct Dan? Not that I'm in the used chainsaw loop but is that realy what they're going for?

There are less expensive models.

Air Filters need cleaned if they are doing their job. Sometimes everytank of fuel.

The rails on the Guide Bars wear and have to be dressed. If the rail becomes unevencrooked, your saw will cut to one side.

The Saw Chain should be touched up every tank of fuel to keep it sharp.

The Drive Sprockets wear and the bearing need greased.

The Guide Plates "chain bumpers" need attention to make sure they are still in working order.

The chain brake mechanism needs cleaned and checked for worn components.

The starter rope needs checked for fraying and rewind spring needs cleaned and lubed.

The Anti-Vibration Mounts need checked to make sure they are not broke or too soft and about to break.

Fuel filter once a year and maybe a spark plug.

Keep the saw clean and it will run a long time. Many times a person will overfill the bar oil and it will run down into the saw or on the flywheel. When the saw is started the flywheel will sling the il all over the cylinder fins. Through normal cutting, the saw dust will coat the oil and "plug" of coat the cylinder fins.

These are just little air cooled engines. Some of them trun at 15,000 RPM.

Thanks for the post Dan. After using a 16" bar McC over the weekend to cut down a xmas tree (it was brand new and still sucked) I am looking for a new saw :)

Hey D'Animal,

Where is this dealer at? I would be interested in buying that MS250 if he is close to SoCal.

So I lent my 28" bar, Husky 266se out to a nieghbor. Normally a trustworthy fellow. I gave him premixed gas and bar oil. He said he was familiar with saws and I wasn't too worried. Two saturdays ago I go to take down two large pines for an old lady down the road and the saw won't stay running. My ancient homlite bit the dust a while back as did I my pallet cuttering pulhan. I haven't had time to do anything so I dropped it off at my local saw shop and told them to call me. The piston and cyllinder are toast. Turns out my trustworthy neighbor didn't use my premix and used straight gas! Saw shop was going to throw it in their "pile" but I took it home. I figure a piston, ring and cyclinder are far less expensive than a replacement. I've seen newe parts on ebay, but where would you recomend getting stuff from. My local saw shop wanted as like $400 in parts, ebay seemed to be $150 or so. Any recomendations?

Baileys has an Online store and so does Madsens. They both sell OEM Husqvarna parts.

Not really sure honestly.

Your comment about elevation vs HP is a very good one.

I was considering something in the 18-22" length. I have a couple of trees that are in the 2.5 to 3' diameter range at Mom's house that I need to cut and with the price of Firewood around here I am planning on making trips to Northern Nevada and Utah to cut a couple of cords. Primary woods are pines, cedar and with any luck, some mesquite. It'll play double duty for trail repairs as well.. Dad has some big'ol oaks on his property that need to go as well. But I can rent a big saw for those...

Whatcha recommend?

If you have some tips on sharpening the chain, please post 'em. I got a ms 270 cb i got last year and have put about 15-20 hrs on it. great saw!!! It probably needs a touch up on the chain. I've read the manual and stihl filing pdf. Looks like if you're paying attention and not taking off too much, you're fine. What are common noob mistakes? What'd you think is a good way to check what you're doing? Use your finger nail to test? thanks for any pointers, ty

72 inch bar

So Dan--Hypothetically, let's say I wanted a small chain saw to carry in my truck for cutting firewood and other light duty, and I wanted a refurbed saw since new would be a waste for me, where would I get such a thing, and which one would I want?

heres a good trail saw for your truck andy, you might need a bigger truck though...

the sierra nevada is a size reference only.
