I was cleaning the shop last night and rearranging some stuff and found 4 more chain saws. :crybaby:

How many chain saws is enough?

I will be replacing a crankcase in an 1120 series (009, 010, 011, 012).


Let me know if anybody wants a step by step pictorial, not that you or any sane person would ever do it.
 
Seems to me like you could convince the powers that be to pay you for these web tutorials....

just sayn... :D
 
So Dan--Hypothetically, let's say I wanted a small chain saw to carry in my truck for cutting firewood and other light duty, and I wanted a refurbed saw since new would be a waste for me, where would I get such a thing, and which one would I want?
 
With a surplus of chainsaws maybe you should "prepare" and put chain-slots on your trucks....like in dawn of the dead.

You loose 3% of the power for every 1,000ft elevation. A 3hp Chain Saw in the valley quickly becomes a 2hp chain saw in the mountains. It is really hard to pull a 20" bar effectively through wood with 2hp chain saw.


My all time favorite saws are:


025 / MS250 with 18" bar for 90% of what I do at home and at camp.


046 Magnum / MS 460 with 28" for trail Openings in the spring.


I use a 009 to cut up pallets. That saw has so much torque you can put the chain on backwards and still cut without hurting the saw one bit.

Small bar, it has to travel easily in a Cruiser and inside a case. The 025 might do it. Max elevation would be Dusy, so 10,500 feet.
 
Why is it that my husky rancher totally sucks balls? Hardly ever started even when new and now after having it 2 yrs it's a frickin paperweight.

Where inside? I park both my saws on the floorboard behind front seats, with room for dolmar & bucket o' sawyer goodies (wedges, spare chains, files, etc). Chaps & helm ride on the seat so they don't get spooged w/saw drippins.

I don't really know. I just want a saw that isn't huge or super expensive for chopping up the wood on our adventures. The inside of the 60 is pretty big, so It can ride where it's out of the way and not stinky. Maybe even outside?

I inheirited w/the property a McCulloch Bearcat w/16" bar, and bought a McC Timbercat 20" for $50.

But if I was buying a saw for my use on 2 acres at 7200' and firewood cutting in the area up to 10,000', I'd get a Stihl 044 20"+.

Here's what I've been thinking of for outside, like on a roof rack or my trailer:

1) what model Stihl is that?

2) pro's & con's to such a mount, other than lockability? I'm thinking the bar tension would be affected, what else?
 
That is an 025 in the rack pictured.

The biggest challenge to mounting them that way it the powerhead is not secured. The guide bar is clamped and the power head "wobbles". It can crack a guide bar about 1" from the powerhead if this type of mount is used for a prolonged period of time.

I will post picts of what I use when the sun is up.
 
Cruiserdrew, you'll remember the little Stihl 009, 14-inch bar, I used for firewood on the Dusy. I've had it for years, it's an awesome saw. It not only worked fine at altitude on the Dusy, it's survived a couple major "wood fests" at Rubicon Springs when other forgot their "real saws".

It's about as small and easy to pack as it gets. I try to keep the chain sharp and keep the bar oil flowing to give the little guy an easier time. It's been super dependable.

Will you still ask me to go along if you get your own saw? Oh yeah, I still have the Hot Shower. :)

Just tryin' to be like you Jim. I need to get DAnimal finding me a decent small used saw. It's going to have to be a Stihl, though.
 
Dan, if you ever have the chance i would be interested in a step by step pictorial on everthing about the 009L. I have 4 of those saws and absolutely love them, I think it is the best saw ever made. Of course i have a 290 for bigger work but i wish they would go back to making the 009L again. I need one for every vehicle i own and i am only halfway to my goal as of now!
 
I am putting a Crankcase in Luje Porters (4x4Labs) 009 so I wil do a pictorial. You may want to buy any 009L's that you run across, we quit selling them into the USA in 2006. What is "in the pipeline" is all thier is.
 
D,animal,you sound pretty noligable about saws.My boss gave me an old 181xp that was blown.He said he had bumped it to a 281xp,before it blew.I got a wild hare and after checking to make sure the crank was solid I put a 288 big bore top end on.All this aside,the thing leaks bar oil like a b***h! I'm going to tear down to install new bearings and seals,what can I do for the oil leak?:confused:

Pressurize the oil tank with light air pressure. See where the oil is coming from. Light air pressure is no more than 2 psi. You may have a crack in the tank.
