OK. Don't blow me up too bad. Here are pics from Wednesday's Center Cap refinishing. I know it's not a lift or new wheels, but it's a start for a newbie. Warming up for birfs this spring. ;) Anyway. Washed and dried, sanded with 380 grit paper, prepped with solvent, 3 coats metallic silver laquer paint, 3 coats clear laquer. Seeing how they looked in the first pic (alomost all paint gone off three), I think they turned out well.

Nice work! They look great. I just got supplies and I am going to paint mine tomorrow. Some people are getting model paint and painting in the symbol, but I think it looks better all silver.

Looks great! I just did this a couple of weeks ago. Easiest and cheapest way to make a big difference appearance wise. I did the gold model paint, but I don't think I would bother with it if I did it again. I too am a newb, and am getting into it slowly. first the caps, then did spark plugs, wires and cap and rotor. this weekend, brake pads. I am hoping that by spring I'll be comfortable enough to tackle the birfs!

You might want to try using a spray-on paint stripper. You can get a can of it at Wally world for about $3 or $4. Beats the heck out of all that sanding, and it actually gets the old paint off.

Is it safe on plastic?

If you search for a post by me, you'll find a much better silver match than what you have. It's a Nissan rattle can - can't recall the specific part number, but it was in my post. Did lots of experimentation to find that shade.

As far as I know, it was fine. Did mine close to a year and a half ago, and they still look great. Wear protective gloves though.
