The hus ran into a guy who sells cbs _so he's gonna trade a gsg . I'd prefer the latest and greatest_especially out in uwharrie.Any suggestions? I like the idea of the handheld units- any drawback to the handheld? Any particular features that are a must have? School me!

handheld units tend to have a little less range due to antenna. but the biggest draw back is the limited run time due to battery life, If you can find one with an external antenna and power it might be worth looking into. If space is an issue look at the Cobra 75 WX ST you can mount it remotely under the seat or dash, and have it peaked and tuned for a little better range. get you a good antenna like a Wilson.

The handhelds typically don't have the range of boxed units in my experience, but they're decent if your group isn't too large. The newer Uniden Bearcat 980SSB is supposed to be a good radio with extra range using the SSB feature. The problem is that most CBs don't have that option.

I'm just running a compact Uniden 520XL and like it for how small the unit is and the simple function. Space up front is important in any vehicle to me.

Well, I ended up with a cobra 29ltd, and a Wilson 1000 antenna and the huz picked up a similar set for the tundra. I considered a 29lx but felt the digital display would detract from the "poverty package look" I enjoy!
