I've always had a CB in my truck but lately my Ham buddy has been selling me on the idea of installing a Ham unit instead.

What say you guys? ...and why?:)

cbs are so 80's

Clear communication without static is golden.
Range
With the use of repeaters you are able 98% of the time to communicate with someone in the event of emergency with many offering phone patch capabilities.
The list goes on and on..............

VHF/UHF is the way to go with the significant power/range/clarity gain. The FCC license is a breeze, so it's really not the obstacle to the hobby that it once was.

I run a Yaesu FT-8900 in my truck and it's great. The dual band capability allows me to monitor two frequencies at once (ie local and repeater) simultaneously. I also have a FT-1900R and an Alinco DR-135...both have proven to be great, basic 2-meter radios.

I vote for CB where you can act stupid, talk about illegal subjects, cuss and threaten people without having to identify yourself. The big whip antennas make your rig look more intimidating and you get to call everybody good buddy!!!

LOL!!!!

If you are going off trail- the cb is what is required.

I am running a GMRS radio (very similar to HAM). I am currently using a handheld in my LX until I can find a good way to mount the antenna.

Also, does anyone have any good antenna mounting ideas? I need a mount that I can attach an antenna that does not extend above the roofline. I have zero clearance in my garage. I could install a taller antenna when necessary out on the road.

crazy1323, are you using the AHC for offroading? how does it do? I'm considering the lx570 at some point and I can't find many people who use the AHC system in the dirt.

I'll probably put my ham radio in my new (to me) 2000 TLC when I get it. I may even figure out a place to put the paddle keyer. I don't see this vehicle being sold so it's worth the hassle

You guys care to share some pics of your radio mounts? CB or HAMB? 200 or other??

Thanks,
Carl

Ham radio face with microphone connect top left and then Cobra CB connect just below it. Relocated 12v plug to the left.

Very, very nice work, as usual.

What rear tire carrier are you using for your 200 series Christo?
