Hey guys, yet another catch can thread..
Apologise for that.

Car is a 1992 1hdt 5sp man, 80 series gxl.
420xxx kms, no blowby with oil cap test.

Long story short, car was making more airy sound when accelerating before boost, no loss in power, i found a nasty leak of black sooty oil around the front of my turbo(factory), and a little bit from a lose Clamps at the top where it enters my Intake. Due having an injury I can't inspect my self the source so I had my mechanic have a look.
I was worried my turbo was on its way out but apparently it's fine , turbo has a minuscule amount of play but rest is fine, his only slight concern was a bit of blowby through my rocker cover breather and the noise sounds normal.
While inspecting we found my hose for oil drain is also kinked and I'll be replacing that shortly.

He has told me to just go for a catch can to help any excess oil and monitor.

I'm really tossing and turning on doing this as I've read some people highly rate them, others completely hate them.

I've been told to ensure if I do make sure I have appropriate hose sizes so I don't starve the engine and create bad pressure.

For those who's used a catch can on their 1hdt which models have you used and any tips for hose sizes and mounting, links would be appreciated.

I've also read to just redirect my hose to chassis for free rust protection too.

I'm from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 if this helps for a source on where to buy if locally as im a bit time limited and need my vehicle In the next coming week.

Controversial opinion: If your engine doesn't have EGR (it doesn't) a catch can is a waste of money and doesn't achieve a lot. Will keep an intercooler cleaner inside but IMHO if your engine is huffing enough oil to reduce intercooler efficiency, you probably should look at a rebuild.

Can I ask why?
Also even if it's to avoid the unnecessary amount of oil travelling towards my turbo? I know there's a sump hose for a reason, I'm just going off mechanical advice. Thanks

I've seen them more often cause problems than solve anything - undersized units causing crankcase pressure, oil leaks etc, bits of desintegrating catch can filters getting pulled into the intake, Provents feeding oil back into the engine, and so-on. A little bit of oil won't hurt the engine.

If you decide to use one, get a flashlube or process west with the stainless gauze filter. They both seem to do something and are designed properly.

HPD are pretty but in my experience don't remove a lot of oil, and the Provents are designed backwards and run the risk of feeding oil back into the intake if the engine blows a lot of oil.

Good to know, I've heard the non filtered ones are the way to go, or just use a steel wool ball.
