CASTROL TECTION EXTRA - your thoughts?

I've now done 2 oil changes with CASTROL TECTION EXTRA: Castrol Canada - Castrol Tection Extra. Started using it because a friend who works as a parts guy at a local Heavy Truck retailer and service centre got a few skids of it and could sell it to me for $54 a 5 gal bucket (inc tax and enviro fees). That's nearly half the price of a bucket of Delo 400. I picked up two more buckets today when he told me he was down to his last 12 buckets of it. So far, my gut reaction is that it is as good as or better than the Delo 400 - although i don't have any oil analysis to back that up.

Any one else using this oil? If so, what do you think of it?

Castrol diesel engine oil has always been a big seller here. A few tests have shown they are good performers on their older blends.
This Tection extra blend is a "low ash formulation to prevent premature clogging of the exhaust after treatment Diesel Particulate Filter ( DPF)"
Are they talking about a diesel cat converter?

I think the older diesel oils had added ash

Is that oil sold in US or Imperial gals?I was trying to compare with our prices. We pay about $80AUD+ for 20 litres of good oil

I guess it is kind of like a cat converter. Don't know much about them except that Ford had a recall when they came out because they we catching on fire. Don't think the ash is missed in my TD4.2. It's pretty good at adding its own.

Pretty much all the oil we get here comes in US measurements - so I got 5 gal buckets (or 18.9L I think) for $54 each.

I know in Australia you have a Castrol Tection JASCO DH-1 rated oil. I didn't see this rating on the spec sheet here. Still, I figure it goes out every 5000 kms and the detergents have to be as good as the DH-1 rated oils. There isn't much of a market here -except for some Japanese industrial and agricultural diesels - for that rating compared to Australia.

Just finished a 2000 kms trip this weekend. I hadn't done any long trips like this before with the this oil. One thing is very apparent is that my oil pressure stays up higher when hot than with other brand name diesel oils. When the engine is cold, it is almost alarming. It sits a little higher than 3/4s on the guage. When it is good and hot, it sits just above 1/2. Other oils like the Delo 400 sit just below half way on the gauge when hot. (Note: this is using the same brand of filters) Makes me think that this may not be the best oil for winter. My next oil change will be in about 2 weeks when I will have run 5,000 kms. I think i will send it in for oil sampling and see what comes back.

I have always run the Delo 400, was thinking about the castrol hypuron semi synthetic instead or for winter. You can get it at wall mart for about 18 bucks for 4 litres.
Any thoughts? Since it is semi syn I was thinking why not use it if it is a bit more expensive.

I haven't done a test on it yet. I'll have to remember to take a sample for Finning. Do you buy a sample pack first or just bring it in in a clean glass jar?

This Tection Extra oil is thick in the cold. Was up in Princeton a few weeks ago and went to add a bit of oil. It pours like mollases and was only -15C. I'll be going back to the Delo 400 in December. Even down below -30C it has been okay with the Delo 400. The Tection Extra can go back in for spring and summer.

For a semi-synthetic, the price is decent. I've found Delo 400 at Teck Truck here in Abbotsford at $72 for a 5 gal bucket.

Head into finnings parts depo and ask for a "S.O.S." kit. It comes with a little black plastic container in a container and a sheet to fill out. Take the sample mid stream while draining, just like a wizz sample. Or if you are sampling mid change ( like large equipment) you will need a proper sample pump. If you are taking the later route let me know as i have the pump.

I am very interested to see what your samples turn out, as i have been trying to find samples to compair mine to for some time. I run the Delo 400 Multigrade 15w40 (probably only for the next 2 changes as its discontinued and 'LE' replaces it)

Thanks or the info. I'll likely do it at the next oil change. Not sure if comparing the 1HD-T to a TD4.2 would do you much good for you: apples and oranges. One is a direct injection and the other an indirect injection. Also, engine milage should also affect the sample. I've got around 215,000 kms on the clock. Anyways, I will dig up this thread and post the results when they are done.

You can just bring the oil to Finning in a little container. Just call them they will tell you what to do.
I had an analysis done a few years back using the Delo 400 and the readings came back as normal wear.
I can't find the sheet right now though.

I picked it up at Western Star in Abbotsford. They gotten quite a few skids of it at a very low price and were selling it fairly cheap - buying market share.

Was back down at Western Star picking up buckets of oil again. The price was hard to pass up on. It was a slow afternoon so I got to talk to the techs and parts guys about the higher oil pressure I experienced - especially at start-up. The said they had a seminar from Castro explaining that higher oil pressure is a normal expectation in cold weather (or any weather) because of the way the oil's molecule technology prevents viscosity breakdown better than most other high grade diesel oils. Good enough explanation or me. At $57 a bucket incl tax and fees, I'll keep using it during the warmer weather. The sale is still on for the rest of the month for any locals wanting to stock up.
