Sorry...I had the camera, but forgot to take pics - I know I should be shunned.
It was a decently long pull...basically the "trail" he was on had a progessively steeper slope perpendicular to the trail. He said for every 1 foot he travelled forward he slid 3' down the hill (which eventually became very wooded and more steep)
We set up high on the trail about 75' back and just pulled him back to the level area...as the wire was reeled in, he didn't really gain much back up the hill and just slid through the snow - resulting in more of a side pull than I wish. In hindsight, we would have pulled him halfway and then backed up some more & pull him again.
Can't say it was the most favorite thing I've ever done (trespassing in the middle of the night isn't what I like to do in my spare time...maybe if I was in high school)...but it was a good opp to break out the winch. Apparently they'd been stuck since 1:30 (we didn't get there til about 9:30)...I pitied his girlfriend.
At what point do you just hike out...call a buddy, and deal with it in the morning?
I was under the impression he had slid off the road and was stuck on a hill...had I known he was up in the "woods" I wouldn't have shown up. I was good minded to leave but when I heard that his GF was back there...I felt more obligated.
