Hi guys,

I have a Gobi rack on order and want one of those plastic capsule things I see on other vehicles that will mount on top of the rack. I need it to put a stroller in and misc bags and duffels for family trips. What are your recommendations for a quality product?

Thanks!

I have used the Thule roof top boxes. Thule’s hardware is extremely easy to use to mount and dismount from the factory cross bars. Not sure what is needed for an aftermarket rack but Thule makes all sorts of Adapters/hardware.

I like to buy from REI, wasn’t sure on the size needed for the growing family and their return/exchange policy is top-notch. I initially went with their medium sized Box: Thule Force XL. It filled up too quickly. After a couple uses over 9 months I exchanged in for the biggest Thule model, the Thule Force XXL. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet.

It’s Dimensions are: L-7’8”, W-36”, H-18”

My biggest complaint with these boxes is trying to stuff taller objects inside, 18” isnt much and fills up quickly.

This link gives good overview of what’s out there:

Here’s a couple shots of the medium sized Thule Force XL on my 200.

I picked up a Yakima Skybox Carbonite 21 (the big one) for my Gobi Stealth rack during the last REI sale. We've been pretty happy with it. It fits right on the Gobi Crossbars. I've heard great things about Thule too but they're a little more expensive and can be harder to find in stock. It's not actually attached in these photos; I just threw it up there to take some measurements on the remaining rack space when it's up (10" if you're curious) but hopefully this gives a sense of how it fits on the gobi rack.

I have an old Yakima Skybox that I ran on my Gobi, but I hate it.
The front of my Skybox will start to pry open at speeds around 80+.
I even bought another crossbar from Gobi to shift the location of the box on the rack. I was thinking that the combo of the rack faring and skybox location was the cause of the uplift, but no change.
I planned to buy a Thule to replace, but haven't had the need due to da Rona.

Have a Thule on the Gobi rack of my white beast. Opens on both sides, light weight, lots of storage, kinda funky fun touristy look. Though I'm thinking about storage boxes so I can put more things up there.

Thule are definitely awesome and well made and we like ours.
For sheer volume the old school Yakima sky carriers can be found used online and they fit a ton. I have the same one my family used for over 20 years. And we’ve over packed it and over loaded it and never had a failure.

On my wife's 4runner we have a gobi stealth rack and the front riser bar rubbed on the front underbody of my Thule HyperXL. It's not a big deal I just put some tape down to protect the metal coating of the rack. The solution provided zero issues. So I would just check some measurements to make sure the length fits the rack.
