Update: The nightmare continues. Convenience took care of that long list of issues and now tells me that the transmission and rear diff are at risk of imminent failure. They recommend rebuilding both. Do I sink more $ into this thing or try to get rid of it now and cut my losses? Needless to say, I didn't budget for any of this and thought I was getting a turn-key restoration.

Tom just talked me off the ledge, so I'm going to go ahead and pick up the FJ40 tomorrow (with its new inspection sticker). I'll get some additional opinions from Tom and others on how pressing the transmission and rear diff issues are.

Ouch! But I'm glad Tom intervened and talked you back from the brink. I'm curious what was observed that caused them to make such a dire prediction.

I'm no expert by any means, but I have been inside differentials and have swapped a few transmissions. I am close enough to help if you need it this weekend or a future weekend.

They were concerned about loud noises that didn't sound healthy.

Tom has graciously offered to take a look at it on Saturday at his place. Probably around mid-day. I'm sure an extra set of eyes (or ears) couldn't hurt, and I sincerely appreciate anything you can do.

Any time you need a second opinion just let us know. We would be glad to help you in any way possible.

Thanks Cam. I plan to bring it to the next tech day. Tom, Steve, John, and Tracy gave it the once over today and thought everything seemed ok.
