So I got in the zone tonight and rebuilt my carb. I have the early large sight glass carb vs the later carb. You guys know what i'm talking about with the 2 metering rods..

Anyway... my question is on the blue plate. I need to clean the bottom half. I used some WD but I need to do better. I know not to dip it but what will really get it clean without stripping it?

I'll post some rebuild pics hopefully tomorrow. THanks!

What year's your blue plate special? My 65s are both Grey Plates

it's from my stock 64 which I believe was made in late 63. The carb has a 3 k something stamped on it. It's definatly earlier than my other 5 C something parts carb that has a grey plate and only one metering rod. Also on the blue plate it has 2 recesses for the gas to fill on the grey plate it has 2 on the top and 1 on the bottom.

anyway here she is ready to go sans some more cleaning of the blue plate. I didn't repaint the bottom green either.

Uhhh...what was the question again? I was distracted by some clean clean bling bling...

Rebuilt mine a little over a week ago.

I used a very small amount of hand cleaner on a soft rag with very little pressure. Got all the dirt and grime out of the logo on my grey plate.

Wes,

If it's a rust stain, try red-b-gone (sodium hydrosulfite / bisulfite) www.redbgone.com or something similar from a hardware store. Make a solution with warm water and let it soak. The iron will go back into solution. Doesn't hurt to let it soak. Oh yeah, you'll want to do it outside, unless you like the smell.........

No, those are tail light ground wires about 2" long. :)

Bill, You recent rebuild kinda lit a fire under me that I needed to do this now. I'm in the mechanical and presentation phase of this 64. Once I get all the little stuff fixed and a stuff like the windshield replaced then i'll move on to the body. While i was in the garage the wife questioned why I didn't repaint this and make it look nice if it's my sunday driver... LOL.

I did reattach the ramsey PTO back onto the tcase this week too. It was starting the clutter my garage.

It doesn't look like rust. It's more of a dirt powder from the gas. I'll try and get a pic.

I'd try it anyhow, worked on the ones I've cleaned. ;)

So the Blue plate carb was November 1963, and by Jan of 65 at least they were grey.

Great pix, Wes!

That I'm not really sure about Dave. I would think that the grey plate could be a change with the 2 vents on the top of the plate as well as the change over to carb without the spare metering rod inside it. I'll post pics of the later one barrel large sight glass carb as comparision.

Nother question. I slapped it on yesterday and it idled beautifully. I didn't take it out for a spin yet. The fuel level wa perfect. Today it's dropped like about 1/3... This was a previous problem with the carb. It would be empty after a day. What's the fix for this?

My large site glass empties, but it takes about a week. Not sure what's going on here with yours, since it shouldn't be much different.

we'll it's only about 1/2 way down. Previously it'd be almost empty so there is an improvement.

That's why they gave you that nifty fuel pump with a hand primer. What, you thought it was for when you ran out of gas? :flipoff2:

Seriously, mine leak down also. Next time I have one apart I'll really try to track it down. Mine seems to be internal.

step-up rod question

Found this thread while researching for an answer to my rebuild question, hope someone can help.
Can anyone tell me what the correct height/adjustment is when installing the new step up rod on these large window 1bbl carbs? How far does it go into the step-up rod jet?

I am trying to trouble shoot why I am having dificulty when slowly accelerating...Idles fine and drives fine at slow steady speeds and when I mash the accelerator down. But it has a bad-consistent stumble when slowly accelerating in any gear. Thanks for any and all help.

I was experiencing the same thing and was 100% convinced it was the step up rod or accelerator pump timing. Turned out to be a leaky intake manifold gasket after countless hours of carb twiddling.

Here's the spec page:
