Hi

I really hope you all might have some suggestions for me. I have sunk quite a bit of money in to this and my wife is starting to get pissed. Any way. It's an '84 FJ60, stock F2 engine, stock carb with 355k for milage.

When I purchased the FJ it ran well for a while, and then started to run rough after a few weeks. It seemed to start when the engine got warm, say after driving for 30-40 miles. When the RMPs got low the engine would die and I would have a hard time getting it started and keeping it running. I would have to pull the choke out part way to keep it going. So I took it in to an import mechanic in the area. They said that the carb was loading up and it needed to be rebuilt. So the carb was rebuilt. After that it started and ran great for about a week or so. And then it started the same thing all over again. I had the same shop look at it again and they said they had to adjust something on the carb. It still hasn't run the same even after that.

It takes forever to start it up and starts running badly pretty quick now.

Sorry for the novel, but I am getting pretty frustrated and the spousal unit gives me the evil eye every time we pull in to the drive way.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help and advice in advance!

Matt

You came to the right place Matt.

First where are you located? Maybe someone can recommend a shop if you don't want to work on it yourself much.

I would start out checking for vacuum leaks. Replacing the stock vacuum tubing can help a lot. A factory smog manual will show you how to check everything. I wonder if the shop really actually rebuilt it like some of the vendor do here on the forum. A rebuild from one of the people on the list here that rebuild carbs is a good start with a original carb.

Do you have manual?

Ask your re-builder what they found in the carb and if the fuel filter was changed.....

most likely rust from the fuel tank is playing a roll in the driveability problems.......

check the filter and see whats in it now..... if there is for a fact rust ? contact your local dealer, give them the truck vin# for tank replacement, if it hasn't already been done you can get a new one for free........

Nocal:

I am located in Windsor, CO...just east of Fort Collins. I checked the recommended mechanics thread and found 1, so I may check them out if it's not something simple I can do.

The shop that worked on it, sent it to some place in Florida for the rebuild and they didn't let me know what the carb was like. It's been over 6 months now since that. I am pretty frustrated with the shop, so I'm not keen on going back to them.

I am going to check the manuals and see if I can spot anything with the tubing.

Grant:

I was wondering if the fuel filter might be needing to be replaced. How does the free tank replacement work?

Thanks again for the advice and help. I really appreciate it. I haven't gotten much use out of my cruiser yet, but it's already one of my favorite vehicles!

Matt
