Just desmogged my 87 FJ60 and now the carb cooling fan does not turn on at all. It worked fine before the desmog. Was there anything in the desmog that is related to the cooling fan not coming on ?

There is no connection between the electrical/vacuum circuits in the engine management system and the electrical circuits for the carb cooling fan.

The soft, annealed wire to the temp sensor prolly got knocked loose. It goes under the intake manifold, to the rear of the carb.

So did mine , but the wire was toast.

Thanks for the suggestion. The wire seems attached securely to the sensor. Time for a little trouble-shooting.
opps, wrong one. Wire looked fine and was connected but it was toast. ok iam done now.

I have had trouble starting the engine when it is warm outside, the engine has been run and is hot, and it has sat for 1 - 2 hours. Just noticed the carb cooling fan does not come on anymore. It starts right up when cold or is restarted soon after shutdown.

Still cannot get my carb cooling fan to work since the desmog. Looked for a cooling fan sensor wire behind the carb but could not find it. The sensor and wire just behing the carb and next to the rocker arm cover I think is an EGR sensor (See first picture). Reattached what I think is the manifold temp sensor and the cooling fan still does not work (see second picture). At what temperature does this fan supposed to come on? I drove on the highway for an hour in 65 degree temperatures then even held a match up to the sensor without success. Picture #3 is the carb cooling fan diagram. Anyone have any ideas?

Is that a header on there? the sensor is attached to the OE exhaust manifold, sort of under the carb. Easier to see it from underneath. Unless there's a fabbed bracket somewhere on there, you got no sensor (if that's a header I'm seeing). Wait, you said it was working fine before the desmog...

I might be high, lemme check... :grinpimp:

Like surfpig said, if you have a header then you probably don't have a sensor on it. You can take a small piece of steel, drill it out for the sensor (I believe the sensor has a nut on the backside so you can screw it into something nont threaded) and then weld the bracket on the header. I have an extra sensor if you want it for a couple bucks and the ride. If you have your original manifold you can re-use the mount and just weld that onto the header. In fact I may even have a bracket for it as well.

Installed the MAF ceramic tuned headers and MAF cat back exhaust at the same time as the desmog. I could not find a sensor on the original exhaust manifold (bottom and rear) as people talk about in this thread. The middle picture shows the temp sensor attached to the intake manifold (brown in color in the picture)- the wire from that sensor goes to the carb cooling fan. However still could not get the carb cooling fan to work. Found out there was a wire going to the catalytic converter( removed during desmog) that needed to be in the circuit for the carb cooling fan to work. This was not shown in the Toyota schematics. Now it works. :)
