General question about car tags. In getting rid of one car and buying another does the tag transfer from the first to the second?

Real world application: My son smacked a deer last week and it totaled the Corolla (big surprise) and we'll be replacing the Corolla. So does will the tag currently on the Corolla be moved over to the next car?

It should move over. Also the taxes for the tag that remain until the registration rolls over. So if he gets a less expensive vehicle there should be a refund (from Montgomery and it takes 6 weeks) or if more expensive the registration will be pro-rated for the remainder of time until expiration of the registration and due at that time.

You can transfer tags..but its not an automatic thing.. you have to tell the nice people who take your money at the courthouse what you want to do. I just sold one truck and bought another...transferred the tag from the old to the new. You'll pay a pro-rated fee at the time of transfer.

Elbert is right, you have to let them know or they won't, and they'll want to charge you the most amount. When I traded the Tundra in for the Scion, I moved my OHSHUNT tag over to it, but i had to go in and let them know, it wasn't "automatic"

Yeah, weather u purchase at a dealership or from a person, u have to let the ppl at the DMV know, also u have 10 days from the date of purchase of a new (or prew owned) vehicle to put a current tag on it, u can ither tell them that the car was totaled or that u traded it in, (although if u go the second rout you need paperwork from the dealership) best with a total if u don't have full coverage, is sell it for scrap, or take it to a push pull or drag sale! Although that's usualy Kia so u may not want that! But there are some sells every once in a while that guarantee you 2k for your trade no matter what condition, although you could part it out if u got some spare space to keep it for a while!


I know that's alot more than you asked, but I figured I'd lednd a lil friendly advice from a Long time car dealer employee!
