I have a hilux with the 3L motor, its got symptoms of dirty pump and injectors (not terrible, just low power and a fair bit more smokey). the injection guy reccomended I bring him the pump and injectors so he can clean and rebuild it, quoted at 500$.

So I've been researching this diesel purge product which seems to be exactly what I need, but I've been calling around a ton of places and nobody seems to have it.

So I was wondering if there is anybody in costa rica that might know a place, or if there exists a descent alternative. I've tried different in tank injector cleaner solutions but they dont really seem to do much.

Diesel purge products will not fix a worn out injector pump or injectors. They will clean up clogged injectors. You can get the same effect running a few tanks of biodeisel - if that is available there. If you have not already changed you filter(s), then do it now and go from there.

If you want to first try luqui molly diesel purge, then you can buy it online and have it shipped to you. I suggest you run at least 2 cans and do it according to the process explained here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3zpwPNijnI.

BTW, $500 for a pump rebuild is a bargain. It would be triple that here.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that worn out injector pump/ injectors need to be rebuilt. The injection guy himself said it was just dirty, and that my motor sounds fine. I took my injectors to him only 6-7 months ago, after that the car started on first crank every time, now it usually takes 2-3 cranks.

I know that 500$ is a bargain (that includes injectors) but i find after researching that rebuilds are overkill when the problem is just filth.

Oh and I have changed my filters like 3 times since i did the injectors, each time they were totally filthy, I think the diesel around here is really bad...... people say it has alot of water

also, the diesel guy stated that dirt seems to have built up inside the pump (which I have heard a couple mechanics say can happen). It even makes a slight humming sound. Both my normal mechanic and the diesel guy said it was dirty pump, the diesel guy didnt think it was a big deal though.

It seems a hilux 3L has no water separator and you might need one?

Shake a tank of diesel and put it in a jar and look for water:

Find something like this

Make sure it has a drain.
Water and crap will settle out, run it ahead of your filter and your filter will last longer.

Otherwise decant your fuel into a tank at home and only use the upper levels, this method is used extensively for aircraft/choppers in remote areas where fuel is left out in the open.

The only way to check for wear of your IP or injectors is to put them on a test bench. Dirt inside a pump = a dead pump. Water will also fxxx up an IP very quickly. Water is a very bad lubricator compared to diesel. Buy yourself a second filter assemble with a glass sedimenter bowl so you can easily check for contamination. Also, if you got water in your fuel, you also likely have algae growing in it too. Usually you will see evidence of it when you change your fuel filter. You will need to give your fuel system one or two full biocide treatments if that is a problem.

Thanks for the support everyone. Those water seperators look like just the thing around here. I dont think I have algae in my system, my filters just look black and kinda soggy like its wet.

I was reading before that biodiesel can have the same effect as a purge, I might give that a try.

I was also reading that in some places they put 1 part of 10 gasoline in the mix, but im a little reluctant to try that, although i have a friend that said they do it where she lives in the philipines to cleanse/ pass smog inspection.

im in the golfito area, im close to the border so the other option is going to david and looking there

I'm gonna hate saying this, but there is a guy by the name of Paul pilgrim that works on toyotas in the SJ area.
Outside of that, there is a wicked mechanic that I know between tamarindo and playa grande, but that's quite the haul for you.
Cheers

Those are exactly the symptoms of an algae infestation. Try an algaecide, and plumb a clear pre-filter before your IP. You will see this filter turning black very quickly. Keep changing it out until its clear. These filters can be had for quite cheap on ebay etc. Then change your primary filter (the metal one).

Water for too long in your diesel will destroy injectors in very short order. Fill up at the same stations the big rigs use. And get a separator.
