Cant decide on a paint color

[AZ '83 fj-40]

hey everyone,
THe day has finally come to get my '83 fj-40 painted, and I cant choose which color. Also how to apply it, like a clear or base coat and how many coats. Right now its white it looks good but shows all the scratches and rust.
1. mustard yellow
2. freeborn red
3. beige
4. burnt orange
5. white (again)

does anyone have any ideas on brand/ application style? and what color to pick?

Any color other than the original seriously devalues your 1983. Probably good idea to talk to a body shop about paint quality, and type. Catalyzed acrylic enamel in single stage is the closest thing to original. Base/Clear can be really nice, but carries its own set of problems. Definitely retain the original white.

Since there is no definite value for any FJ40, the amount of value decreased is a bit hard to judge. My guess is not that much unless you went with a color that was really far from any stock color, like purple.


I like white, same color I'm doing my 40 with. As far as paint goes I would look into a polyurethane enamel or acrylic enamel. My personal favorite is Imron, but there are several other makes out there also.

83's are unique. Less than 300 were imported. Any color change is going to put you in the "driver" category as far as resale goes, as opposed to the "collector" category. Obviously, the money is in the latter. Some folks will buy any 83, but they sure won't pay collector money for a vehicle with a color change. I've had thre 1983's, more than my share. You're probably looking at a good 25 per cent from the top end down to "driver" status. That would be assuming, of course, that the rest of the truck is pristine.

in a very un - original color for 1970 : Honda's deep red: San Marino RED

honda code :R94

if your going with durability: imron
it will fade faster (on average) than any base coat clear but it all depends what the use of the vehicle is going to be used for

You are definitely on the right track going with an Dupont product.

But Imron doesn't fade.
Your clear coat will do this long before Imron fades.

Dupont and PPG are both great products. You just want to make sure your painter does great prep work or the quality of paint wont make a difference down the road


just go talk to a store who deals paint to many body shops. they are the best source of information.

I went to my local paint supplier and talked with them for about and hour about all the options and the benifits and downsides each type of paitn has.
