Canoe mount for roof rack

2 cam straps...that's it. I've used the little "bookends" but found out they were unnecessary. BUT, the tag end of the cam straps have to loop around the cross bar over the canoe and loop around the crossbar on the other side then back to the buckle. I always liked the buckle located near the chine so it wouldn't wobble around in the wind. No bow or stern lines needed.

before a rack I just used two blocks of foam and tied it down...with rack I just put the padded sleeves on front and rear bar of rack....tied two straps over body of canoe...then did a line from bow to bushbar...and one on rear from stern to hitch receiver....never a problem.

the tube cushions are available at most water sport shops...think a 24 inch is like $30 and up ...or you can go real old school and go to Home Depot...buy the pipe insulation that is gray or black with a slit in the side. Buy it large enough to fit around your rack bars....install it...back up the attachment with some electricians tap, duct tape or zip ties.....and then secure with favorite tie down or straps. :)

I will try and get pics of mine but I have pretty much put everything away for winter...

love that high top

I have a brilliant idea i made up the other night in bed, just need to write it up and then build it. I will post pics of the desighn.

HEre is a super super rough idea i put together in paint.

its made out of 5 peices of 8' x 1" angle iron
and 4 pieces of 4' x 1" flat bar.

the rack and universal mounts for bikes and kayaks are all made from that material.

the mounts for the bikes or kayaks will mount in the rack and out of the way when not in use. They will mount via a bolt and wing nut and the yaks, and bikes are attached via rachet straps. the rack bolts to the rook cause i think rain gutter mounts are sissy.

brilliant! You could call that invention 'roof rack' :D
now how about that canoe...

:D

this is what i did.
i had a old bike tire tube.
cut it in half, fold it over.
tie a lenght of rope to each end of the bike tube
use as straps for canoe.

i got the idea from my grampa who made the same thing out of a tire tube to tie the boat on the roof of his truck. we still use the same strap 20+years later.

This might not apply, depends on how your roof rack is configured, I guess. Yakima makes these soft rubber gunwale brackets to fit their bar system. I use 'em to haul my canoe and they are ideal. These, and a set of ratchet straps, and we're off to the lake!

I am in agreement with Yakima load bars... although not 'clever' or unique they fit the bill and functional for various applications.

I initially mounted the high-rise towers (below) but have since cut them down and converted them to normal towers... no laughing at my platform please :o, I like to stand when fishing.

On the rabbit I am using thule load bars...actually the boat fits right over the bike trays.

On the LC, I am using quick mounts along with wood load bars. For longer trips I use some rubber pieces to keep it from sliding around.

If you're worried about scuffing the bottom of the canoe, you can tie the straps around the thwarts, like in this picture:

OT:
Wengejor, aren't the Sawyer canoes the absolute s***? I picked mine up this summer for $200 used, and have never paddled anything half as nice. It's my Cruiser's new best friend, a beautifully crafted canoe for a beautifully crafted truck. Too bad that both my boat and my rig have such crappy paint jobs.

So the inner tube part of the strap is what touches the canoe?

yes it does, the rubber provide grip and the elastisity to make sure the canoe is nice and tight.
