My LC 70 ..... Prado SX5 with 2LTE engine does not like to start on Cold winter mornings, I got one of the batteris changed I was reading on forums that I need a block heater but just saw a video on Youtube by Powermodz where he is starting everyday with no block heater in -25. He has a 1HZ engine .........

What do I do

Get a block heater
Change both the batteries
Just wait for summer

PLEASE HELP

G'Day Fella's,

Sorry Kash but I can't help myself; I assume this is being caused by GloBULL Warming.

Whilst it doesn't get as cold here as it does in Canada, we still have cold -6*C (and colder) winters.
The first thing I check, when my BJ73 is hard to start, is the Glow Plugs.
Hope that helps and good luck with this.

D'oh!

If you're regularly starting the truck colder than -10C, I'd say put in a block heater.

I started my Prado once in -25C with no heater of any type. It's hard on the motor and should not be done regularly IMHO.

What oil are you running? You'll want to use a viscosity suitable for winter. 5W30 maybe?

Glow system is definitely the first thing to check. Remove the glow rail (don't loose those little nuts). Check that each glow plug is low resistance (element ok). Re-install and have someone check the glow rail with a multimeter when you glow the truck. Make sure you get 11V at each glow plug (will only be there for a few seconds while the relay is closed). Once started, check that you have a 6V after glow on the glow rail.

Also, don't start the truck by the little glow light. Listen for the glow relay. In cold weather it'll take 8-10 sec before it opens. Shut the key off, wait a second, and then glow it once more until the glow relay opens. Then start. (double glow).

You can check your compression also, as low compression can cause starting issues.

The 2LTE has lower compression than a 1HZ, so starting might be a little more difficult for that reason. I also think the electronic pump is generally worse for cold starting. I have both a 2LTE (electronic pump) and 2LT-II (mechanical pump) right now. The mechanical pump engine starts perfect every time no matter how cold. The 2LTE never started as well for me.

Some guys have gutted the electronic glow control, and just use a momentary switch (to control the main glow relay).

Thanks guys, REALLY APPRECIATE your help now that I have something to start on I will begin my adventure ,,,,,,,, THANKS AGAIN

New glowplugs and not whats in there now but the right ones for your engine and voltage.
My hj starts like a summer day in -18 degrees celcius so no way to blame the engineers from toyota.
I have a light bulb connected to the busbar to actually see what is happening in the cab.

I have a dual battery setup so I am looking for 24V Bosch Glow plugs ...... Correct ?

kash I had to search but it is in the 24v sticky Which plugs should I be running - B, 2B, 3B, H and 2H diesels
Just post pictures and type of engine, it might be altered by a previous owner and might have wrong glowplugs now.
One bad glowplug can mess up the starting, pour boiling water over the engine to see if it starts correct then.

more here DIESEL TECH FAQ

my 1985 HJ60 has 14.4 volt plugs original with super glow plug controller (because 6xburn all at once is not 24v left)

And more info and fsm pages from my hj here:24V glow, alternator, dome, buzzer, battery, electrics - hj60.freeforums.org

Glow Plugs Set Toyota Landcruiser 24 volt 14v HJ60 HJ61
M10x1.25 15-20 N-m

I have bought NGK 2188 (Y-197R)
before it had ND 14V 19850-68060

19850-68060=

PT-141 = vsp
Y-197R= ngk (Stock Number 2188)
GT217= eiko
CH104/002= CHAMPION

starts with 21v then after a few seconds 14v or so, thinking about also putting a volt meter for bus bar voltage:

Glowing starts with 21 Volt and after 3 seconds it changes to 11,5 Volt for 15 seconds.
If you turn the key but dont start it will glow the above cycle from the moment you turn the key.
If the engine is hot it will full glow and as soon as you start (and the engine starts!) it switches off.

I have added a 24V light connected to the glowsystem to see if it really glows.
Sometimes the releay does not switch over, the orange light also does not switch on.

Here is the 24 volt light in the cabin, starts with 21 V for 3 seconds, then 13 V and then it stops.
When the engine is warm it will still glow 21 V but as soon as it starts it stops glowing.

No, not correct. Your truck is 12V, not 24V. Your batteries are in parallel, not series.

They are 11V glow plugs. Toyota glow plug part number for your truck is 19850-54090 if it is 1990+ and has the 2LTE. There are many aftermarket manufacturers who make glow plugs to match Toyota's spec. NGK, Bosch, etc. I bought Bosch Duraterms and have been very happy with them. Here are a couple links for you:

Another solution I found is I start it every night before going to bed and leave it running for 10 - 15 mins so no problems next day .................................... Love Canadian Winters
