I am working on my 62, and the battery looks like a mess, all sorts of wires, I have replaced a few fusible links but in my haste on 2 different occaisions I put the clip/harness thingy back together wrong, like 2 in the clip and one wire out, or ran 2 wires thru the back plate and one not,,, anyway, is it possible to get rid of the fusible links and go to fues on an aux fuse panel,,, I seem to remember the ratings for the fusible links are close to fuse numbers,,, maybe wrong, but would it really hurt something if instead of 6 amps the it is fused at 7.5? I mean if it is shorting out is 1.5 amps going to ruin something,

what is run from the fusible links anyway

I just replaced the 5 links off of the positive lead of the battery. They were cheap from Toyota. Part number 90982-08251 list $11.35. If your links are messed up then this is an easy fix. Not sure exatly what runs off of it, but the diagrams would tell the story.

Fusable links run pretty much everything but the starter. Your entire electrical system comes off of one of the fusable links - you can replace the f-links with inline fuses, but they don't take the kind of abuse that a fusable link will. I'm running my truck that way with 30amp fuses, and generally don't have many problems. I will eventually wire in new f-links - one of those "when I get to it" projects.

Forgot to mention, you can get fusable links at O'Reilly, AutoZone, etc. They will be with all of the other fuses and electrical stuff. Way cheaper than $11, too. Maybe $2 a piece.

Well, I got the part from Toyota for $9.83 after taxes and TLCA discount (not sure if any dealer offers that around your parts) . Since there are 5 of them I think that the OEM would be the only way to go. I never like doing things twice and there is no money gained by going aftermarket. just my $0.02.

Thanks,
the links are not bad it just looks bad, bc I have 20 wires coming off the battery,, I have extra lines for the trailer lights and an extra light in the cab etc,,,
I replaced some fusible links with ones from autozone before, way cheaper, but not the exact rating, no problems since then,,
I would just like to clean up the battery terminals, and go to a sleeker more compact design of a fuse block

swank what problems do you have?

I'd like to find a cool little "sub panel" to tie to the battery. Something with some big high amp terminals, maybe a couple of fused and unfused circuits. Small enough to mount on the fender near the battery. These things probably exist for marine applications but I haven't really dug into it yet. I've still got a 3000 watt inverter sitting in the box because I can't decide how to mount it. My current plan is to have a jumbo DC plug next to the sub panel to plug in the inverter when its needed with some 1 or 2 gauge cables.

Sorry for the hijack.

Anyhow its a natural place to tie in the fusible links.

Get all that crap off the battery terminal. Go down to West Marine and check out the fused and unfused distribution blocks they sell for marine electrical systems. I have a positive side minibus with 5 - 100 AMP terminals that mounts on the same plate as the ACR on the PS fender between the Coil/Igniter and the battery. I am remoting the fusible link from the battery to the minibus, and connecting the minibus to the positive side of the Automatic Charging Relay. This gets everything - fusible links, radio power line, driving lights - off the terminal.

cost like $10.

I used a Sable distribution center. Most new cars have them. many run the Maxi fuses of the amperage needed to replace a fuseable link. It cleans things up nicely, gives you plenty of options to run accesories, and is an easy fix on the side of the road if you blow one.

I did a write up many moons ago and can't find it here on 'Mud. i need to add it to my website, but that ain't gonna happen for at least a couple of days.

That is what I am thinking, I have an 8 fuse block from napa I bought for an old tractor project,,, but I am selling that tomorrow,,, so I thought this would be a good use of that fuse block..

Liquor cabinet's running dry so I went back to look if this post went anywhere. Turns out it was my fault it didn't.

I am no web author. It's kinda embarassing, but it's the easiest way to share tech.

The fuse site doesn't really have much new info. I have some before pics and maybe one of the Sable, but not on this computer.

Mike:

Did you get around to doing this? Between fusibile links, arb compressor, horns, etc, I have too much crap on my battery terminals. I'd love to hear how it worked out for you. If you have pics, that would be even better.

what I ended up doing was putting a buss bar in, and moved all the fusible links to individual terminals,, so I kept the fusible links, but taking them off thebattery, and upgrading some wire to the buss bar/tobattery helped with my charging issues and battery problems,,,
