Can you help me identify what Hella 4000's I have?

Howdy-

Got a set of Hella 4000's off craigslist today for a song!

They're in good shape and complete minus the harness/relay and switch. However, I have no idea what kind of 4000 they are. There are NO markings anywhere and my only clues are these:

1. The gal said they were wired into her regular lights, when her lights came one, so did the 4000's. That makes me think fog pattern or the Euro Lamp with City light.

2. There are TWO bulbs inside. One in the center where you'd expect to find one and one closer to the bottom. The smaller one has a brown and yellow wire attached, and appears much smaller. The "main" or center bulb has the blue and brown wire attached.

3. I have three wires coming out of the back- blue, yellow and brown.

4. They say Hella Metal on the rim of the front of the lamp.

Thats it, no markings at all. Anyone?

Anyways, this gets me stoked to get moving on a front bumper I have been wanting to make for a while.

Just pulled the housing and I can see that they main bulbs are 100w!

The 100w bulb is either Eurobeam, cornering, or pencil beams. Pencil beams have a different glass though. I would bet they are most likely the Eurobeams since the cornering lights aren't very popular.

I'll vote for the Eurobeams. Honestly, I had a single one on my*bumper for a while and found them too bright to be useful in every day driving - even out west here. When an oncoming car appears a mile away you'll already be annoying them, and shutting them down makes you night blind and uneasy for a bit.

Hella Luminator Driving

These are called Driving beams, great lights. I had some but I smashed the lenses in them both. I´m waiting for a replacement from the Hella dealer.

Some of them came with that tail light option, but not all of them.

I also ordered a HID h1 kit to install in mine. They look good on the front bumper of a 80.

There's a guy on ebay that sells Hella parts. I believe his username is PTCFactoryOutlet.

I got the same set of lights from a buddy for free, but one had a busted lense and they were missing the wiring. I picked up a new factory Hella lense from the ebay guy for $15 and the complete wiring harness with relay, switch, etc for $75. The Hella wiring harness was worth it IMO because it includes the plugs for the lamps which would be very hard to get otherwise I should think. FYI, he didn't have what I needed listed on Ebay, but I called him and he had it on the shelf, and don't be afraid to bargain with him a little either.

BTW, I've come to the conclusion that these lights are not all that useful unless you do a lot of straight backroad night driving where there aren't many cars coming the other way. For highway driving and most windy roads, my stock highbeams are just as effective. I have contemplated adding a set of Hella 500s pointed off to the sides though, as the blowback going into a tight corner is blinding in a sense, even with just the stock highs.

I'll most likely be moving these over to my mini-truck since I've seen flashlights that are better than the stock headlights.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that I don't think you have an 80 series, so some of my comments above may not be relevant.

Yup, I don't have an 80. But I believe I have an older style, there is no OEM factory connectors, just a grommet with about 4 tiny holes and three wires coming out. I am thinking of building my own harness, relay, switch setup if I can get a hold of a wiring diagram.

Here in Iceland we connect the small pulp inside to the taillights.

Would you suggest giving them their own relay?

No the parking lights dont need a relay, Just tap it to the original wires.

But of course you will need a relay for the H1 bulbs.

That is the spread pattern - Fog and Euro pattern are different. - In Oz anyway.
I have 1 of them and 1 spot. - but without the parking (city) lights.

Gotcha. Mine have a plug that clips into the back of the housing. It's about .75"x1.5" IIRC the harness I bought came with both sides of the plug, although the holes for them were already in the housings. I wonder if you couldn't just cut the rectangular holes in the housings and clip everything in.

It looks like they just cut a rectangle out and put the plug in, no raised bosses or anything. SO, I would think that if you bought the harness from Hella, you could retrofit the plugs into the housings and have the more "modern" setup. Or, worst case you could just cut the plugs off and hardwire them in.

I tried to take pics, but it's dark out and they didn't turn out. If you'd like me to grab some tomorrow let me know.

Would you shoot a pic for me? Just trying to decide whether or not to splurge on a harness or make my own. I like the weatherproof connectors, but they aren't mission critical.
