I had to remove an AA spud shaft from a three speed transfer case so that I could replace the front seal. The shaft is held in place with a 7/8" nylon lock nut. Apparently, the nut has a non-standard thread. ( I mis-spoke in the original post that I could get a replacement nut locally. Fine thread 7/8 bolts are 14 thread pitch. The AA nut is a 16 pitch. So I am even more interested now in being able to re-use the original nut. Thanks!

I can't fathom a reason not to. Loc-Tite should do close to the same thing as a nylock nut, the only difference might be the loc-tite wouldn't give as much resistance after the initial bond is broken, but you still have the used nylock, I'd do it.

Thanks for the input guys! I was certainly glad to read this morning to go ahead and do it and was especially glad to see that there were no screams not to re-use the old nut. It's all back together with the loc-tited nut. Hopefully if it doesn't work, it will let me know in a gentle way so that I can react before total destruction takes place.

Thanks again!

Oh my Dog! WTF are you thinking?

Just screwin with ya, man! Sounds like a case where I'd do the same as you did.:D

In your search for a new nut, did you try Copper State Nut and Bolt? They seem to have, or are able to get just about anything! JM $.02
