Hi folks I have a 1996 HZJ77 on the way from Japan, Do you know if it is possible to put suspension seats from a ZX into a LX ?

Surely some of the smart guys will chime in but it's hard to imagine the floor pans are not identical.

Hello,

While the captive nuts are quite likely there, the mounting points for suspension seats are different from the 77 in the picture.

On the other hand, the floor panel below the seat is flatter in suspension seat-equipped models.

Some fabrication will allow installing suspension seats, but it may not be practical.

If you have the measurements for the dimensions of the bolt holes in the floor, they could be compared with the suspension seat dimensions. Say the floor pan isn’t the same topographically as Juan has mentioned, but the 2D dimensions are the same - maybe the suspension base could be shimmed and longer/shorter bolts used. Without the same dimensions you’d need new holes drilled, and then I imagine options are to weld some additional metal into the pan for the holes to secure properly or... maybe some enormous washers? Could be precarious. A final option could be welding additional material to the legs, or if you could fabricate some metal to match the existing bolt holes, that could be bolted to the legs without welding. Depending on the dimension difference, double drilled square steel tubing + shims could even do the trick. This cat can be skinned it’s just a matter of will I guess...

I'm with @Gun Runner 5 and @JuanJ ...it's all about the floor pan and captive nuts. I just put a suspension base into my BJ74 and the only major part of the modification was to cut the raised mounts off the floor inside the cab. Yours appear to be identical to mine. Then it was just a question of drilling holes in the right spot. The captured nuts were easily found on the underside of the floor pan. I'll see if I can dig up pics and post them here.

I'll add be sure of your decision. It's a one-way street.

No doubt. I can't tell you how long I agonized, measured, then remeasured before getting out the cut off wheel for those old mounts. Almost decided not to proceed. I've got the suspension base for the passenger side but am waiting to find the matching seat base before cutting off those mounts.

Did your truck have the captured nuts under the floor pan ? I purchased two seats here from a wrecker/dismantler who said they used to sell them to people to put in diggers - Are the bases the same as the 70 series early Toyota Prado ? from what I could see it was the same part number ?

Do it, this mod is a lot easier than one might think. Intimidating due to the cutting, but a huge upgrade and really not much work. Even if the captive nuts aren't there (like on mine), you can still see where to drill/mount because the reinforcement plates are all the same and already have the holes. I took mine to a muffler shop and paid ~$20 to complete the conversion, i.e. getting the nuts welded.

Only downside - there will be holes in your carpet/floor cover where the old mounting towers used to be. If you can't live with that, consider replacing the floor cover as an expense for this project.
